Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Or nuke SoCal, whichever is easier to accomplish in Minecraft.

Build the wall. Throw a bucket of fish heads over the top every so often, so that we don't get accused of neglect. Send Snake Plissken in if we need anything from SoCal.

Bahahaha needing anything from SoCal, oh me

"why are western animators so afraid of simply drawing?" It's either super basic designs, puppet rig trash or 3DCG of varying quality.
I just recently finished watching Gundam 0079 and I've been having the same thoughts for a while too. Even if the animation itself is antiquated there are still a lot of really good looking hand drawn keyframes that look really nice. That's the difference between the two.

Not to turn this into an East vs West debate but I think that American animators don't animate anymore because US studios are still forced to pay workers a living wage and maybe benefits, or they try to get away with not pay them at all. Everything gets outsourced overseas because it's a whole lot cheaper than doing it all in house in the US. Television animation was kind of a mistake in that regard. There's also a lack of true innovation or creativity. Just look at what's being animated. Like art styles, and the levels of animation quality. It's the same shit being done the exact same way. It's boring. Some shows still manage to be really well done animation wise but it's not that common. Anime is guilty of doing the same shit too with a few exceptions because they're allowed to actually have moments of genuine quality cuts of animation . Older animators with high levels of skill in 2D animation are retiring or literally dying off unfortunately.

American animated films are bland kiddie trash (with a few exceptions) made to appeal to the lowest common denominator because they cost so much to make. There's a lack of risk taking, which is a problem with Hollywood in general because movies and TV shows are so expensive. We have the ability to animate things with computers that were almost impossible to before the invention of computers, yet most cartoons haven't looked that much better in a technical sense than 10 or 15 years ago (most cartoons get BTFO by animated movies from the 20th century). Even if you had a unique vision and wanted to do interesting things with animation in the US animation industry, you're surrounded by self obsessed ideology driven manchild hacks like:
That’s because both an animator on the show and the director said that any character that was genderswapped is now trans.

I’m serious.

There's definitely an element of studio control hampering projects even before getting into the talk about individual talent. Never underestimate how cheap Western animation studios can be. If they can cut costs, if they can refuse to allow for redo's on art that would've otherwise been fixed with a once over they will definitely go for the cheaper option and just shove it on the air.

I've never seen a Western show go to air with animation that had to be improved for the DVD release, though.

Though the fact is, you're gonna have to deliver a product eventually and you can't just take all the time you want. That's why John K. got fired.

This is basically it. American animation has turned to a race to the bottom in how to produce the cheapest animation while paying its animators the absolute least. Yes, there are genuinely some people who aren't that talented working in animation--we all know about them. But there are also a lot of skilled individuals who don't get to shine because they can't be paid to. The animation pipeline in America is incredibly rigid for a reason. Anime gets away with producing high art at a rate of pennies per frame because there's a long-running precedent for paying its animators literal slave wages, but it's not something anywhere should aspire to.

tl;dr I wish animators internationally were paid appropriately for their craft and could create good art goddammit

Oh for sure, but I'm certain if there's any studios that would be unwilling to spend even the bare minimum to ensure a character's proportions are correct or there isn't some random floating element in the shot it'd be a Western one. Now that you mention it, cleaning stuff up for the DVD release should become a Western practice too. Even if it looks OK to begin with, it can always look a bit shinier.

Did I hear that the Mary Poppins remake had to pull old animators out of retirement because the current batch had no idea how to do 2D? Though anyone on this thread probably knew that already.

It's like rigorous, realistic, academic style painting. Too few know how to do it anymore because low-effort methods and ideas - in this case a century+ of modernism and its bastard offspring - became the norm. Ironically the big commie blocs, the Soviet Union and the PRC, preserved that culture and tradition the most. Is Japan the eastern stronghold for animations version of the story?

I'm not usually one to give a shit about how someone looks, but the fact the woman in the top right has a head like an egg and is right next to an egg-like character (I assume one she made) is very funny.

You made me look closer. Why did you have to do that? What did I ever do to you?

Ah yes, the old talking about diversity while showing the whitess of fucks in the front. Also "isn't welcoming" is kind of weird to say given the fact that all that gender shit has almost become a cliche in this industry.

tbh he's pretty iconic, everything I see that face that stupid tune starts playing in my head and the pain comes back. Way memorable that some current series right now.

I love how they constantly pretend the West's animation industry isn't already woked-up and filled with trannies. Even when they have shows like Steven Universe that's meant to pander to them, it's apparently still not enough. They should realize that their never-ending list of genders isn't going to help them make good shit.

SU got it in the neck a lot from the purity police. You're right, it's never enough for these people (who, might I add, make things worse for regular LGBT individuals).

I remember that time SUfags attacked an artist on Tumblr for drawing Rose Quartz just a tiny bit more thinner. And I remember that it got so bad it almost made her shoot her own brains out.
That show and its fans are just riddled with drama, isn't it?

Oh that old chestnut. While it's true SUfags can be obnoxious faggots at the best of times, that incident wasn't down to them per se. Still retarded though don't get me wrong.
