The Final Fantasy Thread

While I was listening to the FFVII Remake OST on Youtube, I was thinking of just how different in style so many tracks actually are. Usually, the score sounds like Uematsu shoved into a Hans Zimmer machine. Granted, arranging Uematsu songs is like reinventing the wheel, but why not play arranged Uematsu songs with metal instruments like the Advent Children or Crisis Core OSTs? Since this game has a whole bunch of different composers on it, I always get the feeling that whenever they have to arrange an Uematsu song, they do so passive aggressively and really only care about their own songs, even if it doesn't fit the scene or if it sounds like it should be in Soul Caliber or something.

Now, I don't think its bad per se, but the score does feel inconsistent.

Speaking of XII, I read the short-lived manga adaptation. It had some interesting ideas like fleshing out Ashe's past but also some wtf ones like her arm disintegrating after summoning Belias. This was where it got cancelled so I don't know where the hell they were going with this.

FF8 was a disjointed mess of set pieces that didn't really feel connected
  • Characters weren't given arcs that would have provided them a purpose.
  • The "ancient" Centra civilization... despite it disappearing 80 years before the game starts. Some wires must've gotten crossed, because somebody should remember it.
  • There are three massive Gardens just sitting around, waiting for Anime High School simulators military academies to be set up.
  • Why are we putting on a talent show when the world is supposed to be at war?
  • Why doesn't SeeD have more trained killers? They put some 17 yo rookie in charge?
Square were always the first to push the boundaries on graphics. I'd rather the game was finished and made sense, but the way it is now, it's better to focus on the visuals.

8 also has the most "young adult fiction" plot. In other words, it resonated a lot with teenagers.

I remember thinking, is this a prank? Was this inspired by Raiden doing naked cartwheels with his junk covered?

I expected Arabian Nights/Aladdin-themed hijinks (reflecting the desert culture of Rabanstre), and I get an irritating little bugger who, like a dud penny, turns up everywhere.
I've always called Vaan: "Gay Aladdin," and I will continue to do so until the near future at least. Balthier was clearly the best character in that game. He called himself "The leading man" and he was correct. He was always the main character, even if the story itself sometimes pretended that Gay Aladdin was instead.

FF8 was a disjointed mess of set pieces that didn't really feel connected but did feel sterile to me.
This is pretty much the best description of FF8. It's like the developers had some set pieces in mind (end of disc 1, garden fight, the space station) and then worked overtime to try to shoehorn the party into all these things.

it was also, apparently, trying to be like FF7 but its opposite at the same time.

With all the talk about FF12, I gotta say I really enjoyed the music score. I love how each region has its own theme that really helped set the mood, tension, etc of the map. Giza Plains with its flute and snare drum progression made it feel like setting off on a grand adventure when you first start the game. Same deal with East Dalmasca Desert's theme. Barheim Passage's track did a great job creating tension and a sense of claustrophobia. One of my favorites is the track of Fran's home, Eruyt Village. It's so peaceful and serene like their treetop village evokes.

I think 12 has the best music to map synergy of all the modern titles. FF13 is all over the place and it sucks in comparison.

Also, Vaan and Penelo are two of the most annoying characters.

The score is great. Really adds to the scope in those outdoor areas. Especially the Paramina Rift.

The Lowtown theme is atmospheric and fun.
Vaan and Penelo are two of the most annoying characters.
She has less personality than a Cactoid.

Funny thing: Penelo, Hope, etc. always put fans on the back foot. "I love him/her BECAUSE they're annoying/unimportant!"

The Lowtown theme is atmospheric and fun. Even if the game is barely interested in Lowtown. (I guess we didn't spend that much time in Sector 7 Slum, either; but I really enjoy both.)
The Lowtown NPCs are fun. I'm a fan of the demented merchant who has a bunch of swords but won't sell any of them.

FF12 NPCs in general are usually worth talking to, and there are a bunch of them. Still not sure how all these random refugees are getting to Mt. Bur-Omisace when I needed an ancient Viera artifact to destroy portals and then murder a boss to get there though.

You know what grinds my gears about Square?

Is their shameless favortism towards the most current FF entry and FF7. I kind of ranted to a close friend of mine yesterday after seeing details about that FF 1-6 bundle that Square just kind of almost handwaved it away like they were ashamed of it or something. Turns out I dont think Im that far off from the truth. I have seen screenshots and the whole thing seems grotestically basic.

It seems just a visual makeover (a cheap one at that) of the first 6 games. The font looks something out of RPG Maker. What really caught my attention was the part in the description saying that any additions and improvement from other ports and remakes wont be included. Like, legit, I love the the 2D entries, sure...but they arent perfect on a tecnical level. Like, legit, the first 3 games specially.

I think Square is just really banking on the chance that we go "Well, better than the subpar versions of these games on Steam already". But Im not if it will be even that! Does Square knows how easy is to emulate the first 6 games? 4-6 are on the GBA! And those ports are actually improved and even have new content.

Its no wonder they didnt have any console ports of this, imagine turning on your PS5 to play these!

And the worst part is that most of these games got remasters on other consoles like the PSP! I would have appreciated if Square just ported the PSP stuff on PC so people can enjoy the argurably best version of these games (then again, 5 and 6 got the shaft as they didnt get dick besides shitty mobile ports).
That bundle doesnt even have After Years for FF4.

They didnt show much at E3 because legit there wasnt much to show. And there are no console ports because this is meant for the mobile market, thats it. This bundle is meant to appeal to fucking cell phones instead of legit ports and they think that porting it to Steam too will disguise the fact that this is cartoonishly lazy.

My close friend said that it isnt FF7's fault and its Square's. And he isnt wrong but I have come to legit hating that entry over the years because Square milking its fanboys shamelessly over the years, kind of climaxing with this remake (legit, is anyone insane enough to think Square will put that amount of work on remaking any other entry ?)

Its nostalgia pandering because nostalgia fags keep buying. Its just enraging for me, as a fan of these 2D classics, seeing them getting the shaft while FF7 gets the shameless golden child treatment since its fanboys keep treating like its the next best entry since sliced bread is rage inducing.

Finally picked up FFXV on my ps4 for the first time in about a year.
I dunno why I dropped the game, I was only on chapter 3 but I think it's because I got too distracted with all the damn side quests. But I love the chemistry so far with all the chocobros and I can't wait to see more! Still getting used to the combat since FFXV was my quarantine game of choice and I have no idea what i'm doing anymore.
Not gonna lie, I wish the choco-mog carnival was a forever thing since I got into FF via KH recently (like...2018-2019ish) but oh well maybe if FFXV ever gets some fancy port it'll come back? Who knows.

However, I do find it weird there's like some what of a lack of merch for the game? I thought there would've been more stuff for FFXV like plushies or a nendoroid of Noctis, or something else outside of the play arts figures.

Crisis Core is pretty fun when my PSP battery doesn't give up after 3 hours (I still gotta beat it, super early in game still but I know some spoilers), and world of final fantasy is pretty cute and a nice break all things considered. I still got FF7 Remake to play, since I kinda bought it as an impulse because of a certain solider, but since i'm somewhat of a newfag to FF still, is the original FF7 a MUST play or is FF7remake fine enough or is it it's own animal?

Remake is definitely its own animal which we went through a few pages back.

My only complaint is that it's too expensive, they look like faithful ports but holy shit, 80 dollars for 6 20+ year old games? Should have been at most $30 for the whole bundle. I might at least just get FF3 if it's good, since we finally have a real 2D remake.

The pixel remasters don't look awful until you get to the UI and the text font. When a massive game company with fuck-you money has menus that are equal in quality and laziness to YIIK, you know you've fucked up.

Was Square always this dysfunctional, or is this spillover from Enix?

Everyone's quick to blame "toxic community" for SE's bad rep. Typical fanboys not interested in any discussion with their one-line shit.
