Japan keeps strict records of all they're non citizen residents who are live there permantly or temporarily, they have your picture your name etvc, if you move you have to give up to date info or get yeeted out, you cant even change your job with out being yeeted.

Maybe he was hired as part of a team to reverse-engineer the N64? Software emulation is still shit for it, and noone has produced a FPGA or hardware clone for it yet. It would probably be pretty lucrative and also piss Nintendo off. It would fit with the company mentioned earlier and be a logical next step for Near.
Edit: Again, I think his work in Japan is probably the key to exposing his bullshit.
