If you're a good John Q Citizen and phone them up to alert them of a child exploitation crime, the best case scenario you can hope for is they'll come to your house and seize your phone or computer for evidence and basically just inconvenience you for months, and the worst case scenario is they'll arrest you just because they can and then forget about you and let the AG's office eventually get around to letting you go. It doesn't matter how untenable any case against you is, you don't want to be spending any time in jail with that kind of paperwork, and there are feds that will absolutely throw you into jail for a week with that kind of paperwork just for shits and giggles.
