All the major domain registrars are pretty much useless for true freedom of speech these days. It's really kind of perturbing just how easily they cave to pressure. The next step is clearly something like blockchain-based/decentralized P2P DNS.

The centralization of domain name resolution, hosting, and payment systems are pretty much the main reasons why Silicon Valley and the banking industry were able to consolidate so much power in the first place. The internet should be decentralized as much as possible, to take control away from the completely untrustworthy tech giants and put it back in the hands of individual users.

In the 90s, all we had was consolidation for the normies - AOL, Prodigy, etc. All the nerds and pervs hung out on private listservs and bulletin boards. We are seeing a re-consolidation to that norm - curated sites that keep normal folks comfortably ensconced in a bubble.
