Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Pixar hasn't been consistently great in like 15 years imo.
2011 was when it all started to fall apart, as that was the year of Cars 2. Their output since then has been mostly average overall, with either Up or TS3, based on who you ask, being their last truly incredible film.

(Well, I’ve heard some people bring up 2017’s Coco, however only one good film in a decade is far, far from their previous record.)

It's astroturfed to hell and back, too:
i'm sorry what.JPG

For building a wildly inventive other world that makes room for everyone and giving queer kids a welcome template alongside which to explore their own budding creative energies, The Owl House receives a Peabody.
Of fucking course it's only because of DIVURSETEE and QUEERNESS. Fuck me. *sigh*

I’ve started watching Amphibia because I kept seeing it brought up positively on here in comparison, and that show really is so much better.

As much as I’m not quite sure how they’re going to get everything done with the final season, they’ve at least said outright that the show was envisioned as three acts, and it’s going to get three acts… a far cry from the incessant whining that’s been seen from the Owl House creator and fanbase, who are freaking out and trying to spam Disney with letters to try and get another season.

Is that really all it says for it? They went into a lot more detail for SU's award
No, admittedly:
A young girl crosses a mysterious threshold and finds herself in a magical, colorful land where she finds both the strength and the support group she needs to become who she’s meant to be. Alice in Wonderland. Dorothy in Oz. Coraline in Other World. To that list we should now add: Luz in Boiling Isles. Don’t be fooled though. Even as it borrows this well-worn framework, the Dana Terrace-created animated series, The Owl House, feels anything but familiar. For when Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), a 14-year old Dominican-American girl, stumbles onto the surrealist mishmash of a world that is Boiling Isles, what she steps into is an endless world of possibility: this is a realm with three-eyed witches and bat-like creatures, octopus monsters and owl house demons. It’s there where her quirky, albeit gory, creativity is allowed to run amok, away from her mom’s prying, if loving, eyes. With an adorable wolf-like demon by her side and a fabulous, droll-witted witch as her guide, Luz embarks on her quest to become a witch, a liberating identity that feels as expansive as Boiling Isles itself.
All of this is a lie. Watch this video to find out why.

Like I said. It's best that Amphibia doesn't get that much attention hence why it is still good.

That really doesn't sell the series that well. I'll fully admit shows like SU include a fuckton of homages but the core concept is still something that I've not really seen any show except maybe Kipo pull off (the family/personal identity aspect). Amphibia seems to be doing decently with it though. Helps that you have the voice of Goofy as the grandpa character.

If I’m being charitable, I’d maybe add in Inside Out as well. But it is depressing to see Pixar fall so hard after Cars 2 and never get back to that greatness. Those first 15 years were truly a golden age.
Doesn't help that the writer of this episode, Molly Ostertag, made this campaign poster for the Democratic Socialists of America

And yes..... that is the Communist Manifesto on that character's bookshelf
Why am I not surprised that Noelle Stevenson’s wife has her fingers in this pie?

She's the wife of the creator of the sjw She-ra reboot who's currently transitioning into male so ofc. She also wrote the "gay" dance episode and of-fucking-course Luz had to look like an adrogynous clown

edit: The show's consistency and writing is like... Amity is afraid to stand up to her controlling parents except when the plot demands she doesn't. Amity was Willow's childhood friend whom she broke up with to "protect her", except she also bullied her and is the reason why Willow is so bad at magic. Amity didn't want to be bullies with other rich girls and is actually a nice insecure girl who is mean due to peer pressure, except all these times she clearly enjoyed bullying people. Eda is supposedly a wanted criminal, yet everyone knows where she lives and she has no problem submitting her apprentice into the magic school. Lilith was Amity's mentor, never mentioned again. Lilith is reason Eda got cursed but she eventually chose to do the right thing and shared the curse with her sister, sacrificing half of her powers. Probably an example of the show's good writing for once, except all the supposed conflict between the sisters is resolved in ONE episode and Lily fucks off to hang out with her mom (no, really).

Inside Out is one of my favourite modern Pixar flicks, but it's also the one that made me realize just how prevalent and consistent the buddy roadtrip aspect of these movies is. Once you see it, you really can't unsee it.

Owl House really is a show at war with itself. On the one hand you have people who genuinely want to tell a good or at least ok fantasy story that's like a west ern version of little witch academia (anime always does it better) on the other you've got non biniary/troon clowns trying to leave their stink all over it and force in their mouthpiece ideals cause MUH DIVERCITY COMRADES!

Rule of thumb when it comes to disney television animation stick with season one then bail out and never look back. IDK if its Disney themselves or the writers who are aware nobody cares or wants woke bs in their shows, but they seem to avoid adding wokness in their shows in season one. Saving all that for the second or at least later half of the first after they've suckered people into thinking a show will be good and not have any of said wokness.

Yeah, a lot of the writers and artists on this show are pretty much inept, just look at Zach Marcus for example, he's another guy who works on Owl House, and look at what shit he's tweeted in the past

The trailer for the new Pixar movie Turning Red came out.

It's about a middle school girl who turns into a giant red panda for some reason. The premise seems kinda random and I have no idea how they'll make it work for an hour and a half movie. And those character designs are, I don't know what to say. The spring release date isn't a good sign because Pixar's movies usually come out in the summer when kids are out of school or winter before awards season.
Okay is it just me or are the character design in Pixar films are getting worse with each passing film? Pixar films used to have great character design. Look at Sully for example. You can look at his design and you already know about his character. What helps distinguish him from other characters was the amount of hair on his body, which was considered a technical achievement in CGI at that time. Pixar films knew how to make each character distinguishable. Now it seems like the character design in modern Pixar films are becoming cheap. Every character design in modern Pixar films are too simple or just too generic. There is hardly any specific character design in the films anymore. The generic character designs are making every new Pixar film feel like every other modern animated feature coming out today.

Did you know someone at CalArts has a tape of Ross Bagdasarian yelling at the animators because they didn't want to work over Christmas?
So like father, like son then.

Has that tape ever been released or is it going to be kept private? I wonder if Ross Bagdasarian yells are similar to those Buddy Rich rants that were recorded.

Well, you'll have to ask the guy who has it. Unfortunately I don't know who exactly it is, but I'm hopeful it will get released.

There's apparently a story about the time Bagdasarian got carjacked as well. Maybe somebody will tell it in public someday.
