Games Journalism General

LOLOL. It's the same fucking cycle for the past 7 years:

Games journalist posts stupid fucking article either fueled by butthurt, the desire to farm rage clicks, shill for friends and/or push an agenda

People tell said journalist that their article was poorly researched and they're full of shit

Games journalist cries like a little pussy, able to dole out criticism but not willing to accept it

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Ian Walker only started working at Kotaku last year, and it seems that he has easily elevated himself to be the worst guy there. Nice editorship with the site, Patricia.

The words of someone who clearly doesn't know shit about (a) business travel, (b) location research, and (c) the work and responsibilities of a company exec. But bosses bad, mirite?

So it seems like there's universal recognition that the article is shit. Even ResetEra of all places got a thread criticizing it, at least until a mod came in to play Journo Defense Force on page 7.

But over on Twitter, Ian's doubling down like crazy and crying harassment with no self awareness.

Goddamn man, just take the L and bow out of Twitter for a while.

Accept that you had a bad take and made a shitty article, listen to the developers, and learn from the experience.

Seriously, when even ResetERA sees through your shit, you should stop acting like a petulant bitch.

Is this the same sister-complex faggot who's mad at FF-Nioh game?

Well that's good to know that Japan is still being Japan. Hopefully I can visit before it changes too much.

And yeah, Europe was disappointing. It shows how much they're becoming like us, even the games and games journalism they spout is the same shit we put out. Which is why I believe cities are a poison that kills anything unique about a nation, all of these devs are positioned mostly in cities these days and it just shows that they keep producing the same schlock we do. I dunno, maybe my mind is muddled, but I noticed more in my youth when a game was made from somewhere else. It has little differences that our nation wouldn't have as a perspective and that was neat to me. Now, though, it's could be made in New York, Montreal or Paris and it'd feel like the same shit. The journalism is the same way, but that might be more Twitter's doing... who knows.
Games that wear where they came from proudly, and on their sleeves are still made. I remember the first time I checked out Maldita Castille, a Spanish Ghost and Goblins throwback, and Fight N' Rage, which IIRC is the first-ever vidya to come out of Uruguay. These ones always have heart, like a Wakaliwood production, where all they want to do is be the best game they can be in their own weird way, and I kind of love them for it.

I actually, while writing this, just found out that the former got a Switch port, which is neat. Just this year I played through Hrot and Haydee II, so there's still plenty of companies doing it the old fashioned way. That's very good for us. Due to platform diversification (something the big Journos and Progressives fucking despise, I will add), there's always going to be outliers trying to make the coolest games they can without a single fuck being given, as god intended.

Ask him if it's hard work going to E3 and he will say it is grueling, people cannot understand how hard it is to look at vidya for three days and then talk to people about what they're making. Or how hard it is to go on the old "technically not a bribe" trips where EA paid for the airfare and hotel in Hawaii so they can listen to someone talk about Medal of Honor: Pacific-something for a couple of hours, then they're free to do whatever they want. Or go to Rome because a game is about Romans. These are technically vacations, but not a bribe, and journos used to complain endlessly about it.

This is why so many of these psuedo journalists are so assblasted - pre gaymergayte/pre-Twitch, these fuckheads had it made: get free preview copies, get wined & dined on the site/publisher's dime, and then get paid to go to expos and cons where they got free swag, then retreate to paid-for hotel rooms to get drunk and screw each other. If you look around online, lots of these "journos" would brag and wistfully reminice about these golden days (especially Leigh "My liver has turned to stone" Alexander).

Now that Twitch streamers/YouTube reviewers are doing their job for them, and gamergate put their "bribe me with booze for a good review" activities under a microscope, the party is over and they are MAAAAADDDD about it.

Streamers can also do the "yeah I'll play your game on stream for $25,000". There's always talk about the made amount of money streamers make, no one talks about game journo salaries in any context other than pointing out that whatever they're getting is too much.

That's another aspect behind their butthurt. Twitch Streamers and YouTubers are doing the same job they did, but they're reaping way more fortune and fame from it than journos ever did.

Why do you think they have such a hateboner for PewDiePie, and painted him as a Nazi over a stupid edgy joke that hurt no one? Especially since he's got so much Fuck You money that short of Felix eating a baby or raping a kitten, they'll never cancel him or force him into poverty.

Another week, another absurd display of Kotaku's professional demeanor.

Is it so hard to just say that XCOM was made into a bog standard team-combat gacha game on mobile to the dismay of all XCOM fans?
