Superhot VR removes scenes implying self harm citing "sensitive times", steam users lose it. - Can we no longer be trusted with adult themes and touchy subjects?

Hold the phone, the early first instances were due to the Satanic Panic.

The origins of the Satanic Panic were a lie. The kid who killed himself did so because he was gay and his parents lied about games being the catalyst to save face. This is where all game legislature stems from, a single a ruse, they even made a Made for TV movie about it which helped promote the lie.
Again, parents who can't parent. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that whole autism fest because of hired investigators (by parents) forcing children to say shit, and the parents didn't think twice?

Am I correct in thinking they just removed this stuff and didn't add new stuff to change it? That's probably the dumbest part of this whole thing. I've completed the original and VR version. They were fun. The VR game's levels were stupidly short though.

I see this as that aspect of woke scourge where once someone suggests something. Everyone is too scared to stand up or challenge it. No one wants to be on the wrong side of the PC woke culture.

"The suicide bit is like really damaging to people who suffer mental illness, we should remove it and stuff."

"People are sophisticated to understand..."

"Are you seriously promoting suicide, did you know that trans..."

So people just shut up and nod. Let the woketards have power for fear or being labelled a witch.
"Hey, I'm part of [group being used as shield here] and I think there's better ways to go about this than removing all the content you find uncomfortable."
"You don't speak for everyone in [group here]."

lol'd irl when i noticed this

Parents who can't parent worth a shit are the fault for a lot of earlier censorship, and it sucks to see how much worse it's become. Oh, you want your kid to play the funny game with red men but, oh no, you shoot yourself at the end of the game? How about, I don't know, chaperoning him until that part and just stop playing?
VR recently "exploded" in popularity because of the quest 2 ($300 standalone vr, no pc needed) and corona. Every free game on it is full of screaming children because why raise your kid when you can strap a toaster to their head. SHVR is on the quest store too so maybe that had a part to do with the removal.

It already is. There's been a few anime games that released uncensored, only to be censored with a patch later (sometimes even day 1). One of the more infamous was Skullgirls (if you call that an anime game) that censored various panty shots. Then there's various AAA games that patched in micro transactions after the reviews were out.
Is there any way to play it uncensored?

If you say suicide in games encourages suicide, that's the same as saying homicide in games encourages homicide. It's Jack fucking Thompson all over again.
The "games as art" movement has turned into a snake eating it's own tail.

One of the great granddaddies of the movement in the west was Bioshock, a game where you can kill little girls (albeit off screen) and is overall pretty grim and violent, but now shit just keeps getting more and more sanitized, my entire life American media liked to be edgy and poke fun at old straight laced media like Leave It To Beaver, but now we're going backwards to those days.

Is the general public so fucked up that they can no longer distinguish works of fictions from reality?
Yes. This generation really does seem to be emotionally and intellectually stunted to the point that they think things they see and hear can directly compel them (and others) to do unpleasant things. Remember these are the same people who cling desperately to <current_pop_culture_property> to inform their world views. It's been about twenty years since we could have intelligent discussion about societal issues without someone comparing a complex topic to dogshit like Twilight, Harry Potter or Handmaiden's Tale.

It has a lot in common with islam and how generally stunted that is. The whole reason women are expected to dress "modestly" in public (i.e. cover up every square inch of skin, with a tiny slit allowed (begrudgingly) for vision) is that they present "too much temptation" otherwise. Muslims legitimately believe the only reason men don't just rape women all the time in public is that they simply can't see their bodies and thus can't be tempted by them. No mention why this doesn't apply in private, but then again there actually is a sizeable about of familial rape indoors, so maybe it is true for those savages.

In the western world that translates to idiots believing watching pornography makes men rape women (an argument I always found really odd since mainstream pornography doesn't -- and never did -- portray rape), playing "violent" video games makes people (especially kids, but now they just think it applies to everyone) violent, reading books with the word "nigger" in them makes people racist, and listening to <genre_you_don't_like> music makes you kill people. They've tried really hard over the years to prove these things, yet study after study (even when commissioned and run by people desperately trying to prove it) has shown zero link between any of it.

i absolutely hate how it's impossible to have any reasonable discussion about suicide.
It's still got a vicious stigma attached to it, which makes people reluctant to talk about it at all and causes them to freak out if they encounter someone who's suicidal, made a (legitimate) suicide attempt in the past or was affected by someone who did. Then add in random faggots who casually threaten suicide on the daily for sympathy and attention and you've got a nasty mess.

It's doubly hard for people who are feeling suicidal; the fear of being involuntarily committed is real and a suicidal person already doesn't trust anybody, so it's difficult for them to find and reach out for help. Even suicide hotlines that claim they don't report callers to local law enforcement to "get them some help" don't actually provide more than a few minutes of conversation and then a referral to someone local -- who might end up reporting them to local law enforcement anyway.

Who the fuck complained about this and why the fuck do the superhot devs care, to my knowledge Superhot vr is one of the best selling vr games of all time.

Exactly. It seems easier to tear some games down in the most retarded fashion because of popularity, because less and less people will see the preachier walking sims with wokeshit undertones. Gotta fine-tune the quotas for the ministry of sensitivity.

Superhot was already pretentious wankery wrapped around an awesome gameplay.
The whole Funny Games “you’re a voyeur and this is all your fault” BS pissed me off so much.
The number of games that want to chastise you for daring to play them really baffles me. It makes me wonder if at any point a book called you a fuckface for daring to want to immerse yourself in its story.

"You deserve better" is such a fucking insulting statement. "You deserve better, you poor, stupid idiot consumer! You can't be trusted with the ability to choose to experiences these things or not, so we'll just get rid of them for you. You DESERVE less content you stupid, moronic child. We're doing this for YOU!"

A good compromise for Steam's dumb off-topic filter would be a no questions asked refund policy every time developers do shit like this, because I have no doubt the developers purposefully didn't include the update rollback feature a lot of other games have for this update.

I disagree. This isn't like the 90s where boomers thought gaming was Space Invaders and Pac Man, and anything beyond that was completely alien to them.

These people grew up in the 90s when Jack Thompson was trying to say Mortal Kombat and GTA was turning people into killers. They know, on some level, they're full of bullshit.

The stock comeback was "it's fantasy violence, but misogyny is real!", which led to this.

I heard the film Wanted did that, though I've not seen it myself.

The worst part is people actually buying the facebook headset.
