Just to clarify about mental institutions and why so many of them got shut down-it wasn't because of bleeding hearts, or liberalism, or the book "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
It was because they were literal pitch-black hellholes full of rape, neglect, and abuse.
Willowbrook was touted as the best institution in the country and that's what it actually looked like.
Imagine what the less well-funded ones looked like.

In hindsight, it might not have been the right thing to do, but I can definitely see how people would think it was at the time.
