I'd ask which one but you make a compelling argument. Its fitting punishment for both.
It's not society, it's human nature. Think about it a minute, which tribe of primitive meatbags is going to survive? The hippie tribe who just sit around all day staring at the clouds and smelling the flowers? Or the tribe that runs around, gathers up everything shiny they find and then smashes them together in combinations with fire to figure out how to make new weapons? It will have to be at a cultural level because we live in a consumerist society where we are conditioned into wanting and the latest iPhone. Our culture tells us that we must have all these plastic trinkets and voraciously consume the latest MCU offering to feel fulfillment in our lives.
Then guess what? After they slaughtered the neighboring hippies, everybody else around started racing to gather up materials so they could have equal weapons to fight back. "Keeping up with the jones" is just a hold-over instinct from your cave days of making sure you're equal to your neighbor so they don't kill you and take your women.
Christianity spent 2000 years trying to teach and construct a society of contentment and get humans to stop letting their desires consume them and we all see how well that worked. Communism tried harder in less time and filled graves with millions of bodies. Face it: it ain't conditioning, grabbing shiny things is baked into your human bones.
A lot of "IFs" need to go in your statement. Remember to learn from Bob and sometimes go, "Is it possible I'm wrong? How would I check? Could this effort go bad? What's the recovery process if it does?"can be solved in the same way as climate change, a problem which is being caused by an emphasis on economic growth.
