Either option is depressing. but I feel that in the end that being institutionalized in the end would be much better for him. Either one he really has no freedom, but with him being institutionalized he can get some therapy and treatment that he has been needing for the last few years.

I guess I'm being the devil's advocate here, but there is more than just toys that Chris is legitimately worried about losing. He has created a significant amount of artwork in the form of his original drawings and comics plus things like digital stuff including save files in various video games. If Barb's house burns down, is looted, or sold, all that will be lost and that would likely be immensely psychologically damaging to Chris.

I recall that was one of the things Anders Breivik complained about. His PS2 was obsolete in 2014 and he wanted a better selection of games and a more comfortable chair to play it in. Breivik had killed 77 people.

Chris's art and all those toys and shit are his entire world. That's where he goes when the real world gets overwhelming. And mock him all you want, he sees it as his life's work. I can understand him being upset about losing all of it.

I looked up the rules for SSDI regarding inmates and this month's payment will be his last for a while unless his lawyer can get a hearing and get him released before he has been incarcerated for 30+ days. After that not only will they stop paying he will have to reapply.

It's 30 days for discontinuation but over a year for it permanently being cancelled. The rules are a little different for a mental institution, where you can in theory get 90 days of full benefits, but I doubt Chris knows this or how to do it.
