He made it seem like it was to compensate or apologise to Ralph for their treatment of her but I wonder if that was for them to inform him that they were taking power of attorney over her and banning him from the hospital. It's easy to imagine him having a Ralph-moment after being told not to vape in her hospital room or her meds went missing, etc.

I had a family member die in a nursing home during peak covid, nursing homes would let you visit a terminal family member if they knew that you actually gave a shit, but the gunt didn't. He probably heard them say that he couldn't and just accepted it at face value and didn't put any effort into getting around it because that would give him more time to drink Maker's Mark.
