No, you're not. Several criminals have acted this way when being arrested. Chris doesn't care about anyone else but himself. He even said Null told him to do it. That's about how much he cares about people that have tried to help him. There are crazier people who are found competent to stand trial. Richard Ramirez stood trial despite being an obvious nutjob.

Chris is not going to meet the legal definition of insane in any jurisdiction in the US. He's an idiot abd delusional nut not anywhere to get him found not guilty by reason of insanity. The threshold for that is ridiculously high for a good reason.

And as others have said, that can be worse than just pleaing out. You can rot in a mental hospital the rest of your life.

The jail's website is so hideously designed and incoherent it's virtually impossible to get any useful information out of it.

But something called the Martin County Sheriff's site says this:

The Central Virginia Regional Jail is unique in that it is a direct supervision facility, which means correctional officers are located in the housing units with inmates to observe and interact. Inmates are not isolated behind bars and barriers. Inmates are not held at this facility for longer than a year.

(Note, there is no "Martin County" in Virginia, so this information is of dubious provenance. But if it's the case Chris isn't in any particular danger because nobody is likely to attack Chris in the presence of guards.)

Manchester High School is not the kind of place where this is supposed to happen. It's hardly the best school in the greater Richmond area but they produce a lot of DI and pro athletes, probably dozens of people a year who go to elite colleges, etc. Even the vocational kids generally don't end up in prison, it serves a perfectly nice upper middle class area. I don't know what it's like to teach at some shithole warehousing school in a bad urban district where your students being involved in horrible crime is normal but I'm sure whoever taught Chris would be extremely disturbed by how he turned out.
