Once the Taliban are in, no way you're storming a few thousand troops through to the embassy without starting a fight with the whole goddamn city. The Taliban would have to show saintly levels of restraint to not light these guys up. And I strongly suspect they are not in a forgiving mood. Don't blame 'em either, the Biden admin already snubbed its nose at you once while its convenient, why would you give them the benefit of the doubt this time.

It wouldn't surprise me if Taliban leadership is more excited for American to get the fuck out of Afghanistan and their leadership has said not to make things too heated while the US already has egg on its face. Record the US fumbling around on their evacuations and looking pathetic and be sure to record your own guys doing nice things for little old ladies or something. Easy international optics win imo and it'd look even worse for the US to then turn around and try to reinvade Afghanistan after the Taliban let them leave without incident.

That's one thing that, even absent of tactics etc, I don't get. I like making fun of goat fuckers as much as anyone, and there have been a lot of shit headed militant groups over there... But the Taliban are some of the ultraconservative crew. Yes they are bloodthirsty monsters. But they still go by that millennia old tribalistic warfare mindset. They would have gleefully allowed Americans to leave in peace if America had kept up with the deal, because to them, that's like the ultimate power play, and also because they have some notion of agreements. Their survival for thousands of years has relied upon strategically managing agreements (not the Taliban specifically, they're not that old, but in terms of Arab warlords in Afghanistan). Pissing them off just to make trump look bad was so stupid it simply cannot be explained with words I can fathom.
