Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

At this point only thing he could do is resign or stroke out. He'll stumble out to the podium, look around the room with an unfocused glance, and then mumble "I'm tired, I'm leaving" ala Yeltsin. Then have someone carry him back to the plane.

I love watching this happen. The US government (my government) has needed to be punched in the face for a long time now. All the better that the Taliban of all groups are the one to do it. I don't have much hope for those people trapped on the ground unless our more useful allies step in and try to help them. The US government's illusory world is finally imploding around them and they're all naked. I wish it had happened a decade sooner, but whatever. This is a good first step toward actually making America great again.

Whats to stop the commanding officer near retirement there from just going out and getting people. Do they not have souls?

I mean you can probably argue during a court martial that the “orders” you are getting from the white house are from some scared flunky or the CiC’s wife.
