In the summer of 1932, thousands of vets and their families went to Washington to lobby Congress for the money. They stayed in makeshift housing. People donated food, clothing, and the like. They got a lot of support from the DC police chief, a vet himself. No money from Congress at that time. In the end, Douglas MacArthur and the Army removed the Bonus Army from their camp, causing casualties.

Palin was a flawed candidate and you can make the case that she was literally a last minute pick which led to minimum vetting because Joe Lieberman (who McCain wanted as his VP) opted not to commit political suicide switching parties like that.

Unlike Palin, Trump at least made the attempt to get to normies and jaded liberals pissed off at the creeping fascism in the DNC. Palin was 100% preaching to the choir and attacking the left rather than bringing disillusioned moderates and normies into the party, the way Trump did with regards to calling out the left's hypocrisy in a way that allowed him to exploit the collapse of the alliance system that makes up the modern left.

Oh, I absolutely agree that Palin wasn't perfect. But then I'd say that Trump wasn't perfect either. The bottom line is that the sheer, visceral hatred she inspired can't be explained away with "she a dum dum". Leftists hated her on a personal level that I can only fathom was because she was a successful, powerful, popular, female, matriarchal candidate who struck a chord with Republicans (and wasn't too bad on the eyes either). She embodied everything that was anathema to their worldview and therefore needed to be torn down and destroyed. If any left-leaning Kiwis want to correct the record and explain how her supposedly being dumb merited such a vitriolic and violent response then go ahead, but nothing else I can think of can explain the sheer amount of bile that she inspired from leftists at the time.

Feels that the balance of opinion on Hanlon's razor has shifted rapidly. It used to be that pinning the blame on our leaders' stupidity was considered a deflection from how deliberately evil their actions are.
