I think the stuff he saw China doing gave him the impression that the virus was a lot worse than what it actually was. Before anyone knew how bad the virus actually is, China was welding shut entire apartment buildings to forcibly quarantine their citizens and they had hazmat squads going around kidnapping anyone with corona to take them who knows where.

This gave the impression that it was really, really bad but it was just more so China being China.

Then it hit the rest of the world and it turns out its bad but not society collapsing bad like Metokur was implying could happen. I don't think hes wrong per se, but I do think he thought it was going to be a lot worse than what it actually was.
