A lot of them use their position of power to leverage deals from companies that want a favorable presence on Reddit. Subreddits for TV series or Videogame communities will have direct line to the developer/creators and the mods may even receive gifts, as long as guidelines are followed. It's why so many subreddits don't allow leaks to be posted.

I rarely break out the "paid shill" explanation but that is what most of them are. They don't do it for free. They are influencers just like the braindead bimbos on tik-tok "trying new perfume" or whatever. It is also why that place is absolutely unbearable during election years. Campaign contributions make sure that every internet town square debate is astroturfed to fuck.

My guess is that some of these folks got their marching orders to do this and it spread because the relationships behind the scenes are incestuous as fuck.

I could be completely wrong but I think they may be starting to see signs that over the next few months public consensus will shift away from the vaccine narrative pretty sharply, especially once we get to the 'a shot every 3 months, one for each season' phase of this dumb shit. I think they may be leaving the door open for "the science" to "change" again, and that's kind of hard to pull off if they outright ban discussion of any kind.
