Portugal’s children are “suddenly becoming ill all at once”
“The feeling we have is that, suddenly, the children are all becoming sick at the same time”.These are the words of pediatrician Joana Martins, one of the child-health experts interviewed by Expresso for an article about how ‘confinement and measures of prevention of the pandemic have weakened the immune system, making us (all) more vulnerable to infections.
“The effects are most obvious in children” whose immune systems are in the making.
Children need to come into contact with dirt (or put more scientifically: bacteria, microorganisms, viruses in general) in order to build immune systems that will carry them through the rest of their lives.
“All the sanitary measures necessary in a pandemic” have meant that this very necessary contact has been massively reduced, pediatrician Mário Cordeiro tells the paper, leading to babies and toddlers particularly becoming dangerously ‘vulnerable’.
Ironically, the youngest members of society – the one’s born during the pandemic – are now at risk from a respiratory virus (VSR) that is potentially much more harmful for them than SARS-CoV-2.
While SARS-CoV-2 infection will rarely develop in children into any serious form of Covid-19, VSR can precipitate acute bronchial infections that can see them having to be admitted into hospital.
And this is what has already started happening.
Says Expresso, in his 40 years of service as a pediatric doctor Alberto Caldas Afonso has “never seen anything like it in the Centro Materno-Infantil do Norte: many children with respiratory infections, in some cases very serious, being admitted to hospital every day during high summer, a time of year when traditionally A&E departments are much calmer.
“The unusual affluence over the last few weeks has taken pediatricians all over the country by surprise, and this is happening throughout Europe and in the United States”, says the paper.
“The phenomenon is what various specialists have already dubbed “weakened immunity”, a state of greater fragility in bodily defences indirectly caused by the pandemic”.
Public health institute Dr Ricardo Jorge has confirmed the “higher than normal number of positive cases of VSR” in children this year. It’s a virus that babies usually get in the first year of life – but due to last winter’s lockdown, many toddlers are only getting it now.
“If we hold children back, we’re delaying their contact with viruses that are unavoidable in the construction of their ‘immune library’. This is what has happened”, Joana Martins of Lisbon’s pediatric Hospital Dona Estefânia tells Expresso. “In the end, with confinement we delayed the inevitable. The truth is we have a group of children under the age of two now who have a long way to go in terms of new infections. And they all seem to be keeping step with each other…”
Mário Cordeiro likens the children’s situations as being like ‘greenhouse plants’ (not as robust as plants that have grown naturally).
It might be fine if exposure to VSR and other microbes now could toughen the country’s youngest citizens up instantly, but doctors are concerned.
“If they are getting sick now, at a time when there are less viruses in circulation, specialists fear the size of the wave of infections that could arrive in the autumn/ winter” when many more viruses are around and people spend more time in enclosed spaces “facilitating contagion”.
In England, right now, fears are that the colder months will see an increase of between 20% to 50% of children with respiratory diseases needing hospital treatment. This has seen authorities “double” the number of intensive care beds.
Countries in the southern hemisphere (where it is winter now) are being watched caarefully. New Zealand, for example, has seen “several hospitals convert surgical blocs into pediatric wards to respond to the number of admissions”.
Specialist in clinical immunology Mário Morais de Almeida puts the situation succinctly: “The first two, three years of life are defining for the construction of the immune system. Right now there are children of two years old who have lived practically their entire lives in a pandemic. They have had very little contact with pathogenic agents than would have happened before, thus, as normality returns, they are going to catch anything and everything – at least until they can recover the delay in creating their own defences”.
Older children, teens, young adults and adults will be equally vulnerable this winter, as their immune systems have also been allowed to get ‘flabby’ with all the measures of protection in place, so they will have less capacity to react when life returns to normal.
Mário Morais de Almeida sees this autumn/ winter as the moment when lots of other viruses will be circulating, and people need to use their intelligence.
If they ‘abandon’ all measures of protection from one day to the next, there could be a huge problem, he predicts. It will be a bit like expecting couch potatoes to suddenly rise up en-masse and (try to) run a marathon.
But for the children who have missed so much in this masked and sanitised world, pediatricians simply hope winter 2021/ 22 will be enough to bring their backward immune systems up to speed.
This is very late, but I knew this shit would happen! Your body needs germs and the people who are mindlessly cleaning every single thing with antibacterial wipes are only going to end up making their bodies sick and unable to fight future diseases.

Aye, it's why I raised an eye brow about the delta strain somehow impacting kids more, how much of it was kids getting sick because society as whole forgot you're meant to let kids play in dirt so they build up their immune systems, and is it really covid you're seeing when it comes to kids lately?
We've condemned the young to save the old, who are still dying more to covid even when double injected.

As with the US VAERS database where it known that the incident reports are between 1-10 percent of the actual totals, I would assume the Australian database is similar.
Hard to say, but even 450 deaths is absurd and any other vaccine would have been quickly pulled from the market. The real numbers almost certainly are much higher.
Since Australia is "zero covid", this is significant.

Well this week has sucked for me so far. First my Catholic parish has returned to wearing masks during services. The irony is that I have noticed those who either spoke or sang would remove their face coverings as they when they approached the microphone (this also happened when my church reopened and was initially masks to be worn).
But what has really brought me down was the session I had with my shrink today. I mentioned that I am working from home and she asked if I had gotten the jab. I answered honestly, saying I wasn't and I did not have any plans of getting it because I am in a low-risk category. While she did agreed with my reasoning, she mentioned that if businesses and events like concerts are starting to require proof of vaccination then I'm going to have to get it to be out in public. She also mentioned my employer may start a policy that you can return to the office if you get vaccinated (and recommended the Pfizer one).
It is disheartening that I cannot express to my therapist the way I do on here or in my journal. Perhaps I am becoming so jaded that I don't even trust a psychiatrist who is suppose to help those that are suffering. It certainly doesn't help that medical professionals have become cowardly and partisan since this whole shitshow began.

Edit: I should be added, that the gene therapys that are being pushed on society, started as cancer treatments. I wouldn't know how to find out if Peter here worked for any of these companies if his Bio doesn't mention it, if some else knows a way to narrow it down, then cancer research is your starting point.
Edit 2: Hold on, this Boi here may have had a hand in these gene therapy when they where cancer treatments and then move himself into a position to get them approved for covid?

The latest bullshit from the county I live in. I wrote this cocksucker Alejo expressing my opposition to a new indoor mask mandate. He ignored me, of course - could tell by my name that I was a white man, just dirt under his feet. Happily for me, I don't go that many places, and not every place I go will expect a mask. Our county supervisors are just fucking useless.

Dear Subscribers,
Going against the recommendation of the county health officer, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors this afternoon unanimously agreed that everyone, regardless of vaccine status, should again be required to wear a mask indoors in hopes of slowing the spread of the delta variant among people who are unvaccinated.
While the supervisors did not vote on a mask mandate immediately, they directed their attorney to bring a written ordinance to them as early as next week, at which point they could hold a formal vote. All five board members said they supported the face covering requirement.
County counsel Les Girard said that the order will likely require residents 2 years and older to wear masks indoors almost everywhere in the unincorporated parts of the county. The mandate will be revisited after 60 days and could be extended. Those who violate the order could face a citation.
Exemptions include those who are working in a closed room or in an office alone, and those who are in a household with family members. Also exempt would be anyone who is “actively performing an activity that cannot be done while wearing a face mask,” including eating or drinking, swimming, showering in a fitness facility or having dental work done, Girard said.
During the discussion, a power struggle emerged between District 1 Supervisor Luis Alejo and health officer Dr. Ed Moreno when Alejo questioned why the health officer had been “unwilling” to impose a mask mandate on his own, while his counterparts in Santa Cruz and San Francisco Bay area cities have already adopted mask orders. An order from Moreno, who has broader authority than the board of supervisors, would also apply in Monterey County’s 12 cities.
“So what is going on in their counties, that their health officers are willing to take a bold position and reissue that indoor mask order and you are not?” Alejo said. “I look at our numbers, and they are alarming.”
Moreno said the most recent data indicate that the county’s coronavirus transmission rate is dropping, as indicated by the decreasing positivity rate for coronavirus tests on county residents. He also said less restrictive measures already in place — such as the push to increase vaccination rates and his earlier recommendation that people wear masks indoors — appeared to be working.
“As a health officer, I can act if less restrictive measures are not effective,” he said. “But in this case, the less restrictive measures appear to have been effective in slowing the rates, so it would be difficult for me to justify issuing an order.”
At a news conference in Oakland this morning, Gov. Gavin Newsom also said the state’s rate of new coronavirus infections is dropping and vaccination rates are increasing.
“California has one of the lowest case rates in America,” Newsom said, while more than 80 percent of eligible Californians have gotten at least one Covid-19 shot.
California’s 7-day test positivity rate of 4.6 percent is the seventh lowest in the country and a decrease from 7.1 percent several weeks ago, Newsom added.
