I will say that the one thing reddit has over twitter is that greater society correctly recognizes redditors are fucking weirdos and things posted on that site are rarely, if ever, treated as real-world important. Meanwhile, "3 antisocial shut-ins on twitter said a thing, this clearly merits our attention" is an entire genre of journalist diarrhea.

I had to leave after it became devoted almost exclusively to BLM sanctimony.
Voat's problem was it was created early during the sanitization of reddit, and as such practically every single thread there was sperging about jews and niggers nonstop. Communities.win has a better chance because it started when the bannings became over petty politics instead of more universally questionable content.
That phase passed pretty quick, especially once Kaep had that farce of a workout last fall, and ever since it's been limited to a few eye-rolling sticky threads from the mods. While I have to tap out whenever they start talking about Cole Beasley, it's more tolerable than about 75% of the rest of the site.

It is bordering on a weird reputation that's for sure. Most people who aren't old and explore the net would know what Reddit is and when social media is mentioned on the internet chances that Reddit will be one of them alongside Twitter and Facebook. Yet, few journos take stuff from Reddit compared to the other two sites. Maybe it's because it's more "anonymous" than other sites and pretty much anyone there could lie especially with the karma system. That and maybe the format of the whole site turns away anyone else, I guess.

I'd argue that this is the most difficult problem to solve related to alternative platforms. You're inevitably going to have a disproportionate percentage of people like that and then the media and any detractors will label your alternative as a "right-wing hate site", which will technically have a nugget of truth to it.
Honestly I think "general purpose" discussion sites are a cancer. The internet needs more specifically focused sites so things are more decentralized.
