I dunno about that. Le Elon Musk himself wouldn't be half of the man he is without the viral marketing shit peddled to boost stock prices on reddit. My predictions after the IPO:
Reddit just doesn't have the hook for investors. "Wait, my company/content/actor, etc can be downvoted???"
- All 'edgy' content purged (obviously already happening)
- Removing access to third-party apps like Apollo on iOS or Sync on Android so all ads can be controlled via the official app
- Full Porn purge
- Removal of spez
- Decline into irrelevance
- Site sells for $50 to digg
We live in an age where there is now a whole industry of boutique reusable drinking straws because of some one-off PR campaign for some "charity" activist group scrounging for donations who said that the old normal ones kill whales with microplastics thrown directly into the ocean. Don't tell me that the viral marketing shit doesn't work and that the big investors don't see it. We all saw Kony 2012.
It isn't widely talked about but shit like recent events makes it pretty obvious that how social media site are administrated has a substantial influence on how topics are discussed online. They then shit into twitters mouth who shits into facebooks mouth etc. They then create internet phenomena that bleed into real life. Sadly.
I know you are trying to make a point about it losing it's appeal but this stuff operates on inertia. It is popular because that is where popular people hang out to discuss the popular thing. If there isn't an alternative then they are going to stay pat. This isn't the old wild-west internet. It is being domesticated and you are being given very few alternatives if you want to discuss things in certain ways.
