You know, I don't even fault Phil for the Burger King thing that much in the abstract. Plans fall through, at some point you might say "Screw it, we'll just do Burger King and get back to the rest of our day".
The real issue is that for Phil there was no rest of the day. No making up for it later, no sense of making lemonade out of lemons, and certainly no fun. Just a joyless Bataan Death March through the same trash-tier shopping and errands he does on every other Day Out With Muh Wife.

Even if everything went to plan, here's how Dave's romantic birthday for his prized horse would go:
