The common man was swayed by every talking head repeating the same thing and holding the same views. Sure, there was some suspicion, but it was too ridiculous to them to consider. Then this happened and endlessly so.

I highly recommend reading letters from the generals on both sides of the Civil War. Most were brilliant, humble men who hated the war. It's revisionist to say it was all about slavery, because it wasn't, just as today's arguments are not just about vaccines and their benefits. The idea of secession had been tolerated every time the Northern states tried to pull it, so the idea that it was treasonous was sort of a post hoc fiction. Both sides had good arguments, though, and it's depriving yourself not to read both sides extensively.

This is how Senate elections used to work before the 17th Amendment. The state legislature, which represented all districts of the state, made the selection for senators, so it was more representative of the actual spread of the state, not just the capital. Direct election of senators gave cities too much power and has fucked our national politics as an indirect result.
