To put it most simply, these things do not happen out of genuine appreciation or love for other cultures, but as a desecration against the first culture. It's like taking a shit on the altar inside someone's church. A crude gesture to remind you who's in charge.

Off topic, but why do subreddits for anime games in particular attract the most deranged coomers? I can't think or find a specific example at the moment, but I've browsed subreddits for games I'm interested in and degenerates in the comments always openly talk about the most deranged sexual things they want to do to characters, even when the original post is innocent. I know they aren't real people, but the way they objectify female and underage characters still weirds me out, these people have some serious sexual frustration.

I know anime typically attracts degenerates in general, but Reddit coombrains truly are something else.

Personally, I'd attribute it to the prevalence of sexualizing characters, even underage ones, in both anime as well as the community surrounding it. There are entire series focused on loli, incest and other taboo relationships which attract the types of degenerates you seem to be describing. The coomers on Reddit migrate from one community to another, eventually overlapping with more innocent characters or nonsexual themes and end up shitting up those subs with their gross fetishes and headcannons.

Looking into iut just a little, it seems that is an odd idea, considering greek/romans did not have a 25th of december celebration prior to christianity. They had saturnalia which was 17th-23rd december. Whereas scandinavia and england had yule at 21 december. Though the are we now think of Germany did celebrate Sonnenwende on 25th. And if anything, if one were to seek a secular alternative, relation to supplanting hanukkah would make more sense geographically (which was a 25th december celebration).

So yeah you pretty much convinced me I was wrong, but I'll read some more before I accept your alternative.

The problem I have with that theory (or the Eostre/Easter one) is that if you wanted to bring pagan elements into a religion to win over converts, you wouldn't choose a very unprestigious religion whose followers were seen as "barbarians".

Hanukkah starts on the 25th of the lunisolar month of Kislev. It has no intrinsic connection to and doesn't necessarily coincide with the winter solstice. I don't get why this topic is debated so hotly, though. It's not as if the OT has no reworking of pagan elements either, and in any case it's perfectly reasonable to have an 'official' date for something that doesn't coincide with the actual historical event it commemorates. We do it all the time in our modern civil calendars.
