I haven't had time to watch it yet, but IIRC they put a tranny character in it (who wasn't in the comic series at all) to try and mitigate the ree-ing. John-John seems to have a comment for everything, except for things you absolutely expect him to.

"ungodly large van" --- Not to fret Bri Bri it's just part of being a n00b, it just feels that way because you are a casual driver, so you just don't have the experience or knowledge. But like you say you drive mainly for pleasure so you are still just a beginner with that kind of equipment.
It's why people give those rental trucks a wide berth. People have double digit hours on them. Hell, you'll get someone who can't navigate a little car in a parking structure, hitting stuff, just get behind the wheel of these without any extra training or practice.

Is that how Soccer moms feel all the time? nah, they are using their vehicles to get stuff done. It's not an identity power trip - it's not like middle aged dude bros who get sports cars to be a pretend racer.
The mom's van is a tool. there might be safety gear like car seats in it or PE equipment for physical development.
