[serious] is hololive (and vtubers as a whole) exploitative?
Discussion
(disclaimer: anyone familiar with me probably remembered my meltdown last december. i'll try not to repeat that incident, but do expect some jaded and cynical views)
a common argument brought up by naysayers is that hololive and vtubers as a whole is "exploitative" and "preys on lonely weak men." as much as we try to ignore and argue back, what are the chances they're right?
think about it.
2020 was arguably the best year for vtubers, especially hololive, thanks to covid. people in quarantine naturally felt bored, lonely, depressed and maybe even suicidal. vtubers proved to be a great distraction, and with a large (mostly male) audience tuning in and putting down the rope/gun to watch some anime girls and throw away their money to, it was the perfect storm for hololive... almost too perfect. with money and attention from almost around the world, hololive expanded and became the industry titan it is today.
that in turn leads to these questions:
is hololive (and vtubers as a whole) exploitative? do they prey on lonely folks who crave attention and interaction (
ESPECIALLY from females)? do the hololem genuinely care about us, or is it just an act and they see us as easy money? what made us and them this way? what exactly is the attraction? what keeps us fascinated?
