Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

"sustain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region" doesn't sound very China-friendly. Milley fuming rn

This AUKUS idea is great and all, but any security alliance in the Pacific that doesn't include Japan, South Korea, and, ideally, the Philippines seems pretty toothless. It's a good idea to exclude New Zealand, I think that they've been penetrated by the Chinese on all levels. Why we don't make overtures towards Vietnam I have no idea. Cam Ranh Bay is a great place for a naval/air detachment and an electronics listening post. I guess that would make too much logical sense.
They should also be courting India, given it's long land border with China, and own perpetual issues with them.

if they decide on a call to their chinese counterparts, that those 'other important allies and partners' don't include Taiwan and Japan, it's extremely friendly. Xi Jinping would likely take that trade in a heartbeat. but this statement probably deliberately excludes them, so that they can just make shit up as they go along whichever way they think public opinion will swing. it would be hilarious, tho, to see UK and AUS be all for an intervention in Taiwan, and the US to go: "eehhhhh...don't really see the point and uh...it's not like we didn't tell China before we told you guys, we won't be intervening lol!" considering what happened in Afghanistan, and what we've just now learned about Milley, that is an all too real possibility!

Not to mention how close India and Britain are and have been for a long time.

I wonder if AUKUS will include trade-deals, as I remember we were discussing looking to Australia for supplies when we left the EU. I don't want chlorine chicken or bugs, but a trade agreement between the three could make things uncomfortable on the continent. Especially if products have to go through the UK to get to Europe.

Iirc one of the reasons Japan became so distant from it's former allies in the leadup to WW2 is that, despite fighting with the Allied forces in WW1, they were more or less disregarded in the context of post war peace talks and got pissed because they didn't even get as much goodies as the defeated Germans did.
If Biden ends up sending the Japs to the arms of the Russians I'm fuckin done

I prefer the Russians to the Chinks any day, any time. I bet most of this anti-Russia propaganda is coming from the Chinks and their lackeys. The Russians are not communists and they will never be communists again. The Chinks are commies, and they are the worst kind of commies at that.

Didn't Milley pink-promise China that we won't attack them, or if it were going to happen he'd give them a heads-up?
The timing is very odd. Especially with the admin defending him.
Edit: how does this deal jive with the white Taliban, covid, and climate change being our biggest enemies now? I'm a bit suspicious suddenly.

The west should 'Israel' the taiwanese, pull all of their kit, factories, people, industry and slap it down somewhere out of reach of China. You can have the land China, there's nothing there for you.
insanely impractical.

there are three main centers of advanced semi-conductors that currently exist in the world. Taiwan is the most advanced (with a, frankly, ridiculous focus of fabs to the point they have to carefully ration the water they get from monsoon seasons, so they can keep it all cooled and running), South Korea comes next with Samsung and the USA with Intel was in a slump recently, though it's probably gonna return to form soon. it's been explained, in depth, that to move just ONE of the fabrication plants would take years, let alone all of them that are located on that island. the equipment inside of them is also huge and bulky and that's just those plants and not even all the local (and quite specialized in its own way) industry that supports it. TSMC from Taiwan has started working on their next fabs in Arizona...but yea, those take years to construct as well.

That was the idea of having a representative republic - that no matter how large we got, the states and localities would still have the final say and hold all the cards. But by the 20th century for whatever reason (and I'm sure a lot of Kiwis will give you different ones) that had gone out of favor for the political class.
It's easiest to blame the Civil War combined with advancements in communication and transportation for the consolidation of federal power
