I'll have you know I was one of those people who hated the Talk Like A Pirate Day meme even when it was still fresh. The fact that this mod still won me over despite that should tell you something.
I pick the Balkans again for no particular reason this time. I have an affinity for the area since it got my love of history started.
As you can see the random name generator now applies to more than just your infantry, but it isn't up to much. Now, given that our pirates are totally comprised of women and will be for some time, there's only one thing I can possibly name this base.
There we go.
Most of this shit should be self-explanatory. Some notable differences is that our Old Earth Lab is unique and we cannot build more. One of our vaults has a turret gun pointing out of it and can defend the base if it gets raided, one of our starting facilities is a Still, and that grey block is a "Burrow" which was previously called a Beast Den last I knew. This is actually a lot more equipment than I remember starting with last time; I was kind of looking forward to starting with a hole in the ground and having to research everything.
You'll also notice the color palette is a bit more vibrant, and that the days of the week have been renamed. Welcome to the year 2601.
As a wise man once said, the world is a freakshow. You can probably already detect a few references in these country names. Ghostgates is of course an Elder Scrolls reference, The Eurosyndicate is carried over from Terror From The Deep, Death Realms is named after a shitty internet meme, and the California Republic is of course a Fallout reference. Fuso and Blackmarch are anime references I believe. If there are any references at all that I miss in this thread feel free to pipe in.
There are a lot of references in this mod, placed rather haphazardly, so I suppose its really up to the viewer if they're tasteful or just a bunch of reference porn. I'll be listing off the ones I know of anyway since some people appreciate that.
There are simply too many of these cities on the map for me to list all of the references. Also some of them are intentionally named something vague or mysterious anyway. There's an optional addon mod that provides descriptions for every country and city on the map, but its not written by the creator of the mod and it seems clear to me that the author either doesn't get or has intentionally ignored the references. Etiher way, I think its better left up to the player's imagination. We have enough worldbuilding to catch up on as it is.
Amusingly, Antarctica is still fully covered in ice despite all the shit that's happened to Earth in the last couple hundred years.
You uh, might need your reading glasses for this mod
The shortest way I can sum things up is that our pirate gals are a special species of mutants, as of yet unnamed unless the Bootypedia was playing up on me. There are two further subsets of our gals known as Brainers, who are the smart ones and act as scientists but are evidently totally deranged, and Runts, which are as far as I can tell regularly-sized muscle women instead of amazon women who are deemed not tough enough to go into battle and thus left to do menial labor.
Gameplay-wise, Brainers are Scientists from the last game, but we cannot simply order more of them or build lab space for them immediately. Runts are our Engineers/Technicians, though again, there are other things we can spend them on later.
These are the only factions known to us so far. Provincal Governments, who are our allies, technically, paying us protection money to rough up the other factions in the game and root out criminal elements so their empires can run more smoothly. This is where the XCOM-like Council of Nations and funding comes from. The Free Mutants are nominally our allies but right now we're too small to be of note from them, Beasts are the various feral enemies we'll encounter that may or may not be tameable, and the Black Market is where we'll be buying most of our armaments from. Once we can afford to, anyway.
The only really important slide of these three is the third one. All six of our starting Gals are classified as Escaped Lunatics, which gives them several buffs to longevity and combat capability to give the player a crutch at the start. For awhile most of our new recruits will suck, much harder than regular XCOM recruits did if you can believe it.
The only two long distance travel methods known to us as this point: a flying van we stole from the lab we escaped from and hoofing it. I presume the Hunting Party option only exists to give the player something to resort to if they somehow wreck the van too early and have no money to replace it.
Evidently our Gals couldn't even escape from the lab with the clothes on their backs as we have effectively fuckall to wear. Castaway is not only the most dignified outfit in the wardrobe, it also contains the most inventory slots since it has a belt and holster included. Yes, this game actually tracks inventory slots (or lack thereof) for the skimpy outfits. On top of that, generally the skimpier you dress your troops, the less effective the armor becomes. Shocking, I know, it turns out sending people into combat almost naked makes them more likely to panic and more likely to be greviously wounded if they get shot.
There are a few very specific advantages to wearing some of the weird outfits which I'll get into when they become relevant, but for the most part I just dress my troops sensibly and ignore the debuffs for doing so because changing the armor on 14 troops every time I need to go into a new environment is a royal pain in the ass.
Most of the melee weapons in this game are mechanical reskins of the Stunrod from the last game and subject to the same limitations that we would have seen in Terror From The Deep had I researched that game's melee inventory. To get around this, some of the weapons are actually reskinned pistols with the range set to 0, which is how you get a hammer that has a Snapshot or a Chainsaw with autofire. This allows these weapons to target inanimate objects without getting the annoying "There is no one there!" message.
The chainsaw's description is of course, a reference to The Evil Dead 2.
Several years ago when Fallout 4 came out, I was discussing the game with a friend of mine and mentioned how disappointing and stupid the Laser Musket weapons were. I said something that would be a cooler idea is if the Minutemen faction started the game out armed with actual black powder muskets, to show how far technology has fallen from pre-war levels. It was probably a month or so later that I tried XPiratez for the first time and found that, to my delight, the game does indeed start you out at the very bottom of the tech tree with real deal muskets. Its one of those little things that goes to show just how attuned to my autism this mod was right out of the gate.
These are all of the weapons we can manufacture ourselves at the start, and more importantly manufacture the ammunition for. I suppose we don't have to research rocks anymore. I'm kind of disappointed by that, to be honest with you.
We start off with a number of more advanced weapons that have been researched, I think so our pirates can pick them up in the field and use them if we encounter them, but as of yet we cannot manufacture the ammunition for these weapons and certainly can't manufacture the weapons themselves. They might be purchasable through the Black Market though, I forgot to check. The only weapon of note here is the Gothic Raygun, which is clearly the raygun from the classic film Forbidden Planet.
I probably don't need to elaborate here. Though I will note the first of many types of alcohol is included here. I used to drink along when playing this game actually, which led to some questionable incidents. Luckily for you niggers I'm sober this time around.
This is all we have researched for other vessels right now. Essentially, we receive a penalty if we shoot down Government craft because we're more or less supposed to be mercenaries for The Man right now, but also we can't shoot down Mutant Rebel shipping either because we're supposed to be a member of the Mutant Alliance. Yes, we're working for both the Government and the Rebels at the same time. Take a drink and stay with me here.
Loot will generally take the form of resources, food, or Credit Chips. As we'll find out the game encourages you to store money in the form of physical loot to avoid getting robbed by hackers (yes, really). Resources are generally used to manufacture various items, some advanced and some not so advanced, and the more valuable the resource of course the more important its application. Some resources like precious metals can also be sold for a profit, but that's merely stating the obvious. Food is mostly used to recruit people. Its complicated, I'll get into it.
Soylent and its green color is of course a reference to one of my personal favorite movies, Soylent Green. The look of the package though is definitely taken from the Soy Food packets in the original Deus Ex.
I've found to my irritation that these objects sell for negative money, which means we need to pay to get rid of them or they'll take up storage space. Great, when did they add that to the game to make it better?
Speaking of shit you need to pay to get rid of, raiding Government ships will also collect an item called a "Fine". This is actually a bit of entertaining trickery using the loot recovery system; as the game considers the Government Fine a tangible item you could hypothetically pick up and fling off the ship to avoid collecting it, but the levels with Government ships on them spawn the Fine already in your landing craft in some unreachable location, meaning you're forced to collect it even if you take off and leave all of the loot behind. On a more positive note, Land Deeds are much the opposite, they carry negative size, which has the effect of increasing the storage limit of your base without having to add any new facilities to it.
These are miscellaneous Bootypedia entries that were orphaned by the weird way this game tries to divide up the categories.
Alright enough exposition, let's get people named. I was gonna pick whatever randomly generated name I liked the most here and make her my leader, but holy shit the generator really spit out a bunch of crap this time. I guess that's what I get for badmouthing automation constantly.
When I first started playing this game like uh, six years ago (Jesus) I always headcanoned that I was some dude these insane lunatics put in charge to handle the books and inventory while they were busy plundering and partying. You know, kind of like how you, the player, are supposed to be XCOM's Director in the newer games. Later events added would make it clear though that you the player are infact whoever your toughest and highest ranking pirate Gal is at the time.
A shame, I had visions of my poor beleaguered "Captain" bent over a shitty wooden desk scribbling in his ledger with charcoal pencils and getting drunk on shitty moonshine every night to deal with the stress of having to be in command of a bunch of dipshits. Oh well. I did get a random soldier named Witty Squid like forever ago when this mod was nearly unplayable, so I suppose that'll be the waifu name I go with.
Inventory loadouts are going to be horrendously eclectic for the first stretch of the game so I'll include them from time to time as well. This is my final warning that your characters will be female in this game and also an additional warning that you could end up starting with anime hair, that's just how this mod rolls. I'll take requests for alternate inventory loadouts though, and I can change your hairstyle if you really hate it, but I'm just gonna pick the next one at random. There are about 50 hairstyles in this game I believe.
I get research going. As you can see we don't have a whole lot to start out with.
No lie the intro, while weird, actually sets up an interesting dilemma and system. Really if I was going to describe this you're a bunch've Ork Freebooters, except they swapped the Orks for cheesecake models.
It's absolutely hilarious how it wobbles from pixelated pictures from other sources, some random woman, or some wildly scaled down hentai. The worst of the worst is the 3D stuff, that's uncanny as hell.
