The figure actually comes from a very sketchy American poll in which 41% of trans respondents said they had attempted suicide (you have to be alive to answer a poll).
Luckily, the Netherlands keeps data on every person at gender clinics in the entire country. Out of all 8000 persons in transition clinics across 30 years, a total of 0.80% of transwomen and 0.20% of transmen died by suicide (source). Note this lines up with the finding that men commit suicide more than women.
Now, this may be an underestimate because some people may have been lost to follow up, so you could probably stretch it to a few percent.
It will also probably increase in the coming years with the Troon explosion: remember, the people transitioning in the 70’s - 2000’s were screened carefully and many got turned away.
However such figures are still substantially higher than the baseline population suicide rate of around 0.05%
So the 41% number was soon picked up by Ben Shapiro to argue that trans people have a mental illness (fair)… and trans activists actually loved this statistic being spread because it allowed pro-trans clinicians like Diane Erensaft saying to parents “would you rather have a trans daughter or a dead son?”. It was soon spread in media and recited to politicians to cause a panic, so they responded by passing countless laws to “protect trans youth”.
Trans people are highly suicidal (a key indicator of mental problems) but their rate of actually doing it is low. Its like the borderline personality psycho who threatens suicide for sympathy and attention so they get their way. Many such people need to be ignored, not affirmed.
In conclusion, I generally don’t like the 41% figure because it plays into the message of the TRA’s: affirm or your child will commit suicide! Remember the public hear that figure and think “society is so mean, we must fix this!” rather than “suicide is associated with crazy”
