Chris' 4th wall non-sequitur stuff is very much lifted wholesale from Family Guy and to a lesser extent Excel Saga if it's an anime reference. The whole Punchy backstory thing makes me cringe every time I read it because the jokes are straight up copy pasted from Excel Saga.

I bet If Chris never discovered that particular show, none of that would've happened (unless he glomped onto someother big boobed anime series).

I would say media as a whole ruined Chris. The 90s cartoons are probably the worst in that regard since half of them were trying to be clever and meta-jokey and the other half was mindless garbage meant to sell toys with tacked on morals at the end to pretend to be educational. And Chris absorbed both without any kind of discretion.

It's sad to see what media can do to someone as vulnerable as Chris here.

It think Borb are more to blame, they are the ones that let Chris spend so much time watching TV without any meaningful human interaction, getting fatter as the years went by. Add his olympic-grade autism to the mix and this is the result.

Certainly a cautionary tale for any parent to keep in mind at all times when it comes to what their kids DO see on TV.

I've always held that the belief that Chris only really got into anime, or the particular ones he did, because of Megan or whatever galpal he was latched onto at the time, as a way to appease them. Chris never showed any interest in Sailor Moon shit until Megan showed up. That's why he doesn't have any real weeb-like tendencies. He stuck with it because of anime tiddy, of course.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was the Game Place crew in general and Megan in particular that got him into it. In the Megan emails, she complains at him for latching onto every single thing she likes. So it was obvious even to a socially stunted weeb girl what was going on there.

I've always found it interesting how Sonichu and Rosechu were originally intended to "grow up", but then as Chris never grew up himself, the idea got shelved.

Probably for the best, but who knows if he ever dares give us a 20 year time skip again.
