The fact they're not married and he isn't on the birth certificate. The child was conceived in Virginia, I believe, and born in California. I'm not sure it has jurisdiction over Ralph and not terribly interested in looking into it but Virginia might have jurisdiction since Ralph is physically present, but I'm not sure which state's laws would be applied. The actual vital record is in California, though, so California seems like the most likely place for jurisdiction.

The right to child support applies to the child, though, not the parent, who can't waive it or sign it away, so conceivably the child could sue over it in Virginia if Virginia has allows it but California doesn't without a signed birth certificate, DNA test, or whatever.

All I really know for sure is whatever Ralph does will be the dumbest, most white trash thing imaginable.

I think the issue is more if she waits too long, the Gunt will be broke or dead. Also if the kid ends up on welfare, the state will ultimately go after him if he's officially the father.
