A thread for me to talk about my nostalgia for 2000’s tv. If anyone remembers these shows they can join in

Balls of Steel

A gameshow meets sketch show where contestants prank the public with increasingly outrageous stunts. Would definitely get cancelled on social media today for wrongthink

Fonejacker

Prank phone call show by Kayvan Novak, now known for What We Do on the Shadows. It actually came back recently with some exclusive spotify episodes. He’s super talented at voices and sort of plays upon the subtle bigotries of the british public for comedy. Completely unintentionally, an iranian who goes about doing cartoony ugandan accents isnt trying to preach to you

The Office, Extras

The peak of 2000’s era tv and its not as good but still good follow up

Bo' Selecta!

I fuckin adored Bo Selecta. Leigh Francis sold out but I even loved series 3. Avid Merrion is like a Chris Chan figure before Chris was even known

The Royle Family

I wish I watched more of this. Royle Family was a really unique. Really likeable show. Tho its not laugh out loud funny clip fuel

The Green Green Grass

Spin off of Only Fools. This was shit. I only caught one episode of it on tv and it seemed so hokey. Maybe someone got into it tho

Gimme Gimme Gimme

I only watched a bit of this but my family loved it and thought it was hilarious. Seemed like a really funny premise and I heard it got cancelled (culturally) recently

The Inbetweeners

Anyone who was a boy in the 2000’s loved this show. This is my favorite scene because it builds on the worsy case scenario for almost every possible character and then hits you with the punchline of a dead dog

Still Game

Another one I need to watch more of. A scottish sitcom focused a lot on patter, tho it continued well past the 2000’s

What about the Mighty Boosh? It couldn't be made today in the current political climate.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=g8wrJZa4ICghttps://youtube.com/watch?v=tqDFrawB82c
I thought Mighty Boosh was 2010 but i remember Mighty Boosh quite well. The Crackfox scared me as a retarded kid. I also forgot little britain but in my defense who hasnt forgoten little britain? I liked it but it wasnt nearly as weird and experimental and wonderful as a bo selecta, mighty boosh or office. Even if you dont like all of those shows

Bo Selecta was Raimi posting before Raimi posting existed

Sometimes im just gonna randomly pick a show and autistically wax nostalgic about it now i have this platform. Bo Selecta was super interesting because i was watching the season 1 BTS recently and it confirmed a thought i had that the characters despite being based on celebrities were really just voices Leigh had developed already that he dressed up, hence why Bo Selecta doesnt really satirize celebrities all that much. Its more about doing the opposite. Tho theres elements of satire there, Craig David as a character became more arrogant as the real life celebrity waned in popularity. The character’s obsession with willy wonka comes from the title of the real guy’s first album, Born to Do It, being a Willy Wonka film line. Another interesting thing is originally it was meant to be a live studio show, where the characters like Craig would interact with the audience while on a stage set. This was changed to more of a Sacha Baron Cohen style thing of going out in public but that’s kind of where the call and response tic Craig has comes from. He was meant to do it to a crowd. Thats also why theres an annoying laugh track still

Thats what makes it so strange Leigh self cancelled. Craig David was mostly an unrelated character to Craig David the person. It’s also strange because while Bo Selecta was a phenomenon back in the day even before 2020 it was so obscure no one wouldve known it unless theyre like me and were part of the cult that loved it to pieces. So him self cancelling is so weird to me. I admire Leigh to some extent because Bo Selecta is so influential to me, because it feels like a FilthyFrank style youtube series but that got air time. The problem is that it got big too quick. As much as I love series 3 it’s clear it was made in response to the popularity of the show, both because people wouldnt fall for Avid Merrion anymore and also to try to make a format for the show that could be more easily milkable. However this sort of led to Leigh chasing more and more popularity rather than just trying to make something weird and funny. Bear’s Tail & Celebrity Juice is the most ironic bit. A sitcom and panel show, even ironic ones, are the antithesis of what Bo Selecta stands for. I also think Kieth Lemon is his worst character because he’s a Mary Sue. A guy who gets women, is super rich and has a big penis is inherently less funny and less flexible than a constantly pissing egotist who has a plastic pet bird attached to his hand
I never watched that but i heard of that. Hey do you remember that creepy cgi show headcases?

It's not really nostalgia and only kind of 2000's since it's still ongoing, but over a year ago I watched Doc Martin on the TV and I really liked the show. It's about a highly skilled surgeon who developed a fear of blood so he moved to some shithole in Wales to work as a GP, oh yeah and he's a socially inept sperg. I enjoyed watching it so I might as well mention it here, maybe someone else knows it or will check it out out of curiosity.

sort of like a british version of monk, which i loved, but my dad was obsessed with doc martin years ago. he got into benidorm recently and binged it all the way up to season seven but then the garvey's left and it went downhill so he's stopped watching. he told me the peak was the first three seasons
Um you forget Peep Show, the greatest sitcom to ever exist, by a country mile.
thats the thing tho im restricted to what i personally have seen bits of to know if i'd like it or not. ive never really sat down and watched peep show and friday night dinner unfortunately. some bits of it are fucking great tho like the turkey meltdown and eating the dog
"YOU FUCKING IDIOT!"
I love the complete bluntness that they just show the dog in the bin to start with. A bit plus of the edginess of the early 2000's was the brutal honesty of what they were showing without sexing it up

I wasn't really into bo selecta, but I have to admit the bit where he sang with meatloaf about selling panties was pretty funny

Edit:doc Martin is kino
as much as im a fan of bo i have to say Meatloaf completely blows Francis out of the water in this bit lol. he can't keep up and just has to resort to mugging the camera in response

OT but Monk was a great series also, Monk, along with Colombo and Poirot is the Holy Trifecta of detective TV series.

Never watched headcase back in the day but i just remembered "I Am Not An Animal" and "Aaaagh! It's The Mr Hell Show!", the latter being the only time Bob Monkhouse was funny.

Dennis Pennis was the better celebrity botherer.

i only know this guy from mongrels lol. funny how he is part of two things that have a 2000's era vibe to them, mongrels and this character, yet they werent from the 2000's

also glad to see the architect gets it :D

idk the difference between bob monkhouse and bob mortimer lol

I've watched The Inbetweeners. Funny but I found some of the jokes a bit too mean-spirited, though it's probably the aim they're going for

I don't know, it's probably the difference in culture in my place. Me and my friends never caught ourselves in hijinks like that when we're that age
