I don't understand why people expect Phil to play any better after over a decade of playing the same way ad nauseam.
Guy looks absolutely miserable playing the game too. I'd comment on the irony of his situation, but that's obviously why people bother following him here.
Makes you wish Phil gave enough of a shit about the story in a story driven game.

Maybe Phil is freaking out because he doesn't wear shoes like 90% of the time since he's a housecat so being asked about shoes is massively triggering to him.

Phil did answer the shoe question. He wears New Balance.
He has to wear new balance because of his back injury. They help a lot for his back pain. He can't wear any other shoes (I do think he mentioned some weird ass brand I've never heard of as an alternate).
He doesn't recommend New Balance because they're expensive shoes. A pair of New Balance shoes will run you about 60-80 bucks if they aren't on sale, unless you're buying top tier premium new balance.
They aren't the cheapest shoes, sure. But damn dude they aren't expensive, even for generic athletic shoes. Most decent athletic shoes (ones you'd actually get for going outside) are still gonna run you about a hundred bucks of sale. And this jackass sits all day.

I know you guys want to shit on Dave for the back injury and shoe claim, but it is legit. I was seeing some specialists over things recently and it came up that some brands are better with arch support than others, covered inner soles etc.
But it was hilarious to see him freak out over such an innocuous question, especially by his streams standards

It baffles me that anybody would need a guide for HL2, the game is pretty linear and straightforward and it's hardly that challenging on normal, nor are the puzzles that challenging.

It's a typical Phil behavior, he breaks down every game he plays in its mechanical aspects and ignores the world building and storyline like they don't exist in the game or are just a nice but unnecessary addition.
I remember how he walked through the sewers and had a burned corpse right in front of him, for seconds,he even pushed it. Not a single immersed word about it, just "Are there more health packs?" because his health was low.
Or as an NPC thanked for his help, he just gave a goat laugh instead of an "No problem sir, you're welcome. When this is over we should go bowling".
There was also this part where he drove through some pipes with his boat and said observational: through the pipes.
And I said: And now you will repeat yourself.
And Phil repeated himself.
For someone who always claims he creates entertaining khantent (something you should never claim about your own videos) this was, as usual, quite the opposite.
He fails hard as an entertainer.
Funny. He also said he never played the game right after the boat gameplay.

Were the numbers on the stream high? Was everyone having a great time? Genuine questions. How many of those viewers were people tuning in because they heard what a trainwreck the stream was?

He had in the 600 viewers at the highest I remember. More people might have shown up when word went around he was trash at the game.
It's classic Bad at Games Phil which I think has been missing. Even with a guide he's a clueless dumbass so it's a good time.
Highlight for me was either his inability to jump out of water or the turret fucking him up. Both cases of Phil being unable to perform basic controls and problem solving.
