His bio is extremely ironic.

Ali Breland is a reporter at Mother Jones covering internet disinformation.
My Gell-Mann Amnesia detector has been tuned to the point that whenever I see a "journalist" covering internet culture I assume they're sensationalizing the story for clicks, or outright lying for clout and ideological points with their scummy peers.
At this point, whenever I see a journalist call themselves a "disinformation specialist" or "covering internet disinformation" then I
KNOW they are an ideological actor lying for clout with their scummy peers.
"disinformation specialist" = "opinion writer trying to play an 'I win' card for internet arguments"
Speaking of research... looks like Ali Breland graduated from UT Austin in 2014 with a B.A. in Plan II and minors in English and Philosophy, having previously studied at Bogazici University in Istanbul. He has written op-eds for CNN.com, The Huffington Post, and The Christian Science Monitor, among others on topics ranging from gun control, to the Turkish protests. (

He earned his own puff piece in 2018 (

Oh, a UT Austin alum. Honor's student from field of "general bullshit"
from the looks of things. (
A) Wikipedia has an
interesting writeup of the program. (
A) I love the bumper sticker zingers in the article,
"I don't have a major, but I Plan II.", or
"Plan II. Plan II do what?"
According to the links above, you can exit the program with a dual major from the College of Liberal Arts or College of Natural Sciences... or, I'm guessing a dual minor if you slack off. Based on what I'm reading, it's a pretty good program if you plan to go on to further higher education for a practical graduate degree (e.g., MBA, law degree, etc.).
Prestigious enough to get your foot in the door at places, but based on what I've heard, (and
this poorly sourced clickbait article) enrollee's tend to have a
particular attitude about them.
Seems like it to me.
What's the over-under on Ali Breland getting his own lolcow thread?
Aside from this upcoming hit-piece, he seems pretty boring. Scummy journalists are a dime a dozen, so lets look over his
Twitter for redicu-- ugh.
Oh ffs, invoking "gonzo journalism" and the "combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" while writing a thunk piece about a coffee shop in a bank building being a sign of "
capitalism financialization gone too far!"
Archive, because fuck giving this "too clever by a half" hack's work clicks. Attempts at observational humor aside, Hunter S. Thompson he is not.
Also, it's good to note, that his
inability to research shines through here as well.
