The sad part about this is that these are clear and concrete examples of the scale of incompetence and borderline (if not outright) malice taking place, but so many people out there and on twatter are instead rambling about directed energy weapons instead. A horrific brushfire caused by either arson or woefully outdated infrastructure and snowballing negligence doesn't make it any less emblematic of both the institutional and political rot spreading like a weed throughout the U.S. It's a big enough scandal without schizoposting about DEW's. Actually Lahaina itself (however not the surrounding countryside by comparison though), has absolutely insane property values. It's basically Maui's Waikiki, only with more historic value that can't be priced.

Hawaii has a weird phenomenon of people being paper millionaires by dint of the land and houses they own, while barely earning enough money at their jobs to survive. A shitty plantation-era single wall house your grandfather bought in the 30s through 70s on a sugar workers salary is often now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars minimum, and millions if it was on the Lahaina waterfront. Why don't they sell and move you might ask? Well, many did. The town is filled with rich transplants from around the world. Those of us still in Hawaii have chosen to stay knowing the situation because the islands are our home. That's why this fire is so devastating. Many will be forced to sell because the jobs that supported them are now up in smoke themselves, and even if they weren't, you simply don't earn enough money or have enough insurance coverage to rebuild.

It's amazing how tepid the media response is to the tragedy, as well as how the government here is very effectively weaponizing island culture to prevent even the most mild attempts by the press into questioning accountability from officials.

As an ethnic Hawaiian, it absolutely disgusts me that officials have convinced some people that talking about fault and culpability is somehow a breach of the ideas of aloha, pono and lokahi. As if being such terrible rulers you allow children and the elderly to burn to death in their homes or drown in the sea isn't a much more disgusting lapse of those values. I say we bring back traditional Hawaiian leadership values they talk about so much, and bad rulership means you get tossed off a cliff or have your head staved in, and all your kin and followers get forced to move to the shittiest land available that has no water.

Apparently this event was announced yesterday and not like months before the wildfire.

Organizer with Hawaii Stands with Ukraine, Lara Palafox was on Good Morning Hawaii and talked about the Independence Day Event that will include traditional food, drink plus entertainment.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Maui disaster relief fund.

The event is hosted by Hawaii Stands with Ukraine and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.

They're dragging out the death count, and making the situation as political as possible. It would be very inconvenient for msnbc to have the Dems be at blame. So having a bunch of Qanon types push direct energy beams or climate change keeps the NPCs in the crowd from looking at the corruption.

I mean when Katrina happened you saw the NOPD disarming people trying to defend themselves from looters, and police joining in on the looting too. To be honest ask any local Katrina washed away a lot of the evil that was in New Orleans before then.
