2023 Hawaii Wildfires - Fire burns down part of island, currently 106 dead, 1,300 missing. Maui - wowie!

I thought that was the Californian National Guard doing the disarming.
Nope during Katrina you had New Orleans police so overwhelmed with looting that in the moment of chaos honest people were being disarmed because as they were trained at the time. Disarming people to prevent more looting was their strategy.
During that time the New Orleans Police department has officers abandoning posts, jail inmates had escaped from the county jail and the mayor decided to Fuck off to los Angeles, the same mayor who infamously said this is a chocolate city ie no spics in our city.
In many ways a lot of locals do believe Katrina washed away a lot of the evil that was in New Orleans.

Generally, these happenings threads are good sources of info and entertainment, but you have all failed on this one.

Were the cops bottling people up in town to up the kill count?
One man thinks so

Biden toured the disaster zone, relating a story of near tragedy when his house caught fire in a thunderstorm
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ng-hes-late-search-850-missing-continues.html

What the hell is even going on over there? If a thousand kids were missing, I doubt they could keep it quiet, but how in the hell do they not know how many bodies they've found or even how many are missing?

I doubt they could keep it quiet, but how in the hell do they not know how many bodies they've found or even how many are missing?

That's easy to answer. The Police Chief of Maui, that was the former incident commander for the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, is also Maui's Coroner.

Just glancing at the totals, this wildfire is three times as deadly as Hurricane Katrina and there is basically zero coverage in the media. The efforts to cover for the Biden administration always astound me, Bush was absolutely fucking savaged by the media for the death toll in Katrina and failed followup, this is almost a note for note repeat of failed preparations and evacuations and incompetent followup.

everyone knows though and everyone is noticing that it's not being covered.

this is MAUI. everyone goes there, or wants to, or knows someone who goes there.

lots of places in the US have surprising amounts of people from Hawaii too because it's so hard to make a living there - where I live for example, I know at least a dozen people from Maui, a lot of more people from Hawaii.

plus people were stationed there

*keep talking this up.* keep posting fundraisers and videos. talk about it irl.

Then there's grey's law, which is that sufficiently advanced stupidity is indistinguishable from malice.
Pretty much the situation were in.
I would argue the fact these people are put into positions of power is an act of malice because there is no way they'd make it to these seats on their own without substantial help from awful people.

@OrangeJuliusEvola What's the overall vibe on the ground now that el Presidente has toured the place and compared the inferno to his minor house fire that killed his cat and ruined his '67 corvette? And are the locals buying the much lower, FBI-vetted missing number?
It really depends on how much information the person gets from mainstream media, which is spinning *hard* particularly local outlets which are pulling out each and every stop of emotional manipulation and gaslighting, and how much they get via the coconut wireless, which is word of mouth. It really depends on social class too. If you're white collar, you're more likely to accept the mainstream narrative, whereas blue collar folks here are so used to being screwed and lied to, they kind of take it on principle that shit's being covered up and things are worse than are being portrayed.

Part of the problem is that the people most likely to be pissed are just too busy and tired to really sit down and think about what's happened and what's happening. As a minor powerlevel, among my work cohort, nearly 75% of people have a full time or part time job or side hustle on top of their main full time job along with their familial obligations. Honestly, I really should too at this point, and if I stop posting here, that likely means I've joined them. People busy trying to make ends meet don't have time to be angry about nebulous shit, and for all of us who live on other islands, this impacts our day to day lives about as much as folks on the mainland.

I don't really have any coworkers with family roots on Maui that I'm close enough to speak freely with, but from observation of social media accounts on the island, there is two streams. Those who are openly pissed off, and those who are going with the flow because it's becoming apparent that if you want what government aid is available to you and yours, you shut up and play along with the narrative.

Nick Sortor is apparently being stalked and harassed for his coverage of the situation.

Don't fucking get me started on that piece of shit.

He is 100% one of those fuckers working to make the cover-up more effective by making extreme claims in the other direction that will be debunked by the mainstream media and used to undermine legitimate claims against government malfeasance.

"Oh, you're one of those people claiming there's 2,000 dead children being covered up by the government? Nutter."

Also he's being an egregious prick when the cameras aren't rolling, which is why people in civilian clothes are harassing him, not because they're undercover Feddies.

He's the fucking glowboy, not some dude telling him to fuck off because he's a known dickhead in the area.

Qanon and it's consequences have been a godsend in the form of controlled opposition stalking horse.

So update.

FBI revised the missing toll upwards. It's now closer to reality than before, but still not as big as the crowdsourced list. Local media is acting like the early conclusive FBI list never existed. "850? It's always been 1,100, and they said it might go up."

No idea why the sudden revision, I'm hoping it's because of the people complaining about it, but who knows. Also, local media is *finally* starting to report on unhappiness and dissent among the people of Maui over the response and aftermath to the fire. It's just getting too large to cover up. They're still running cover for FEMA, Biden and Governor Green, but it seems like any official in Maui County or state HiEMA might now be fair game for going under the bus.

In more ridiculous news, two fuckwits are suing the state to reinstate Kaleo Manuel, the guy who denied water to West Maui during the fire.

Mind you, he hasn't been fired. Just reassigned. Goes to show you how fucking brazen the corruption is here, that the people who owned him will still go to bat for him after all this.

Also, I kind of wanted to be a little more precise about why Sortor is getting push-back from locals. One, there's remarkable sensitivity right now that some outsiders are coming here to basically make lurid disaster porn under the guise of journalism. To be fair, mainstream media is 100% doing this as well, but what they're doing is highly staged and managed, and in all honestly, the deftness of some of the emotional manipulation they're using is incredibly effective. This guy, by all accounts, is abrasive as fuck, and why wouldn't he be? His audience isn't the people of the state, but right-wing political grifters and conspiracy theorists on social media and their followers. Random locals telling him to fuck off is only grist for his audience, particularly since a couple of the people he's taking statements from are known within the community to have had at least a few screws loose even before the fire.

Memo to FEMA, what a way to start a Streisand effect.

Btw, there's a good article who compare Biden's Maui to Bush's Katrina.
August 23, 2023

It is apples and oranges to compare Bush's response during Katrina to Biden's response in Hawaii

By Jack Hellner

The media and other Democrats colluded to destroy President Bush in the same way they have continually colluded for years to destroy President Trump.
Now they are comparing their politically motivated criticism of Bush's response to Biden's obvious incompetence in Maui:
MSNBC’s Jansing: Biden’s Lack of Response to Hawaii Is Reminiscent of Bush with Katrina
On Monday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Chris Jansing Reports,” host Chris Jansing noted that President Joe Biden went days without mentioning the fires in Hawaii even as the response has been criticized for being slow and compared Biden’s response to then-President George W. Bush praising then-FEMA Director Michael Brown during Hurricane Katrina.
Since the media and other Democrats have always trashed Bush about Katrina and have chosen to not tell the truth, the following is a timeline of what actually happened back in 2005:
Two days before the storm hit, on Saturday, August 27, 2005, Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana.
Despite multiple and continuous warnings, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin waited until Sunday, the 28th to order a mandatory evacuation of his city.
He could have used school buses to evacuate the poor but didn’t. He could have stocked the shelters with food and water but didn’t. Think of how many fewer people would have died if Nagin had evacuated sooner and used all resources available.

As an ethnic Hawaiian, it absolutely disgusts me that officials have convinced some people that talking about fault and culpability is somehow a breach of the ideas of aloha, pono and lokahi
this is why i dont blame biden for anything related to the maui fire. This is a hawaiian tragedy caused by hawaiian culture being incompetent.
