I applaud your bravery in uploading Surinamese politics into a Community Happenings thread focused mostly on English-speaking lolcows and whose users think Suriname is a shahdom in Bengindia.

However, some commentary would have been helpful to explain if I should be laughing, angry, sad, or happy, and why I should care.

Or even what election it was. Hiding the obscure country whose election you're talking about in the end of your second paragraph is a bold decision.

For some context to the posters in this thread that were not previously aware of the existence of Suriname (read: literally everyone ITT), this is the country's ethnic + religious demographics, dated 2012.

People make fun of the United States for being mutted, but Suriname is on a whole other level.

If Diversity is our Strength™ then this is the most powerful nation on Earth. I kneel.

Why are they all jeets? Did the dotheads take over South America while we weren't looking?
For my fellow map game autists that have no idea what this country is: Dutch colony in South America sandwiched between French Guyana and British Guyana.
Brought over by the Dutch and the English. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Surinamese)
"[...]Their ancestors were indentured laborers brought by the Dutch and the British to the Dutch colony of Suriname, beginning in 1873 and continuing during the British Raj."
There's also the presence of 2 other significant Asian minorities in the country, the Javanese and Chinese, which makes sense, given that Indonesia was being ruled over by the Netherlands as the Dutch East Indies during the period of time that Suriname was a colony under Dutch jurisdiction. The "Chinese" are presumably a part of the Chinese-Indonesian ethnic group.
