BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Baltimore is facing a devastating reality as the latest round of state test scores are released.

WBFF analyzed the results and found a shocking number of Baltimore City schools where not a single student is doing math at grade level.
“We're not living up to our potential,” said Jovani Patterson, a Baltimore resident who made headlines in Jan. 2022, when he filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City Schools. The suit claims the district is failing to educate students and, in the process, misusing taxpayer funds.

“We, the taxpayer, are funding our own demise,” Patterson said at the time.

Patterson was born in Baltimore. He's seen the failures firsthand, but when WBFF showed him the latest test results for the city, he was momentarily rendered speechless.

“My immediate reaction is, take your kids out of these schools,” said Patterson.

The Maryland State Department of Education recently released the 2022 state test results known as MCAP, Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program.

Baltimore City’s math scores were the lowest in the state. Just 7% of third through eighth graders tested proficient in math, which means 93% could not do math at grade level.

But that’s not all. WBFF combed through the scores at all 150 City Schools where the state math test was given. In 23 Baltimore City schools, there were zero students who tested proficient in math.

It just sounds like these schools, now, have turned into essentially babysitters with no accountability,” said Patterson. “This is the future of our city. We’ve got to change this.”
Among the list of 23 schools, there are 10 high schools, eight elementary schools, three middle/high schools and two elementary/middle schools.

Exactly 2,000 students, in total, took the state math test at these schools. Not one could do math at grade level.

“These kids can't do math. You're not preparing them to buy groceries. You're not preparing them to do accounting, to count their own money. You're not preparing them to read contracts and negotiate salaries,” said Patterson.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore delivered his first State of the State address last week.

“We made the largest investment in public education by any governor in our state’s history,” Moore said during his speech, making his feelings about public education clear. It’s one of his top priorities.

“We can no longer separate our vision for economic prosperity from the duty to make Maryland’s public schools the best in the nation,” Moore said.

After the State of the State address, WBFF reached out to Moore’s office, asking to speak with him about his plan to improve education. Before becoming governor, Moore lived in Baltimore. WBFF wanted to ask him how he plans to help city students, especially those who attend the 23 schools.

Moore’s office did not respond, but City Schools did send WBFF a statement with steps it’s taking to improve math scores, including professional development for teachers, summer learning and an extended learning period at the end of the day.

The statement said, in part, “We're confident these instructional strategies will help us regain the momentum and progress we experienced before the pandemic.”

Zero percent. What are you preparing these kids for?” said Patterson. “Are we expecting these kids to kill off themselves? I mean, we see the number of teen shootings happening just this year. What jobs are we preparing these kids for? That's the future.”
WBFF found three additional schools where zero students tested proficient in math, which we did not include in the list of 23. One of those schools is for incarcerated youth, and the other two are for students with disabilities. It’s also important to note that another 20 Baltimore City Schools had just one or two students test proficient in math.

In every other endeavor that includes a test, the student is taught or trained to succeed at the test. The subject matter is defined first, then a test is designed to measure the student's mastery of that subject, and finally a curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the test.
Curriculum has to come before the test. the test is only there to find the slackers and the overperformers.
 
This is the real reason for the push to label math racist and white supremacy, that way if your students can at least say "Fuck Whypipo!" they score an A+ on paper for math proficiency.

It's not organizational failure. The subject where mastery most closely correlates to one's score on an IQ test is math. That brains which are bad at complex pattern sequencing are bad at algebra should surprise exactly nobody, yet this is considered so controversial that it really can't be spoken. Like doubting whether Mary ever appeared to St Dominic in 14th C Italy.

Whatever the dreary facts of heredity and/or culture there will always be a few outliers.

I'd like to see some math proficiency test results for the teachers.
I suspect it would reveal a great deal about why literally no one is learning.

In college, I had a friend majoring and getting a masters (5 yr program) in elementary education at a top state school. I helped her with her math homework once... as a sophomore, she was having trouble with her "math for education majors" class. It was stupid shit like "find the area of the triangle" geometry you learn in 6th grade.

I haven't talked to her in a minute but I hope she's not teaching anything above 2nd grade... it was very frustrating in elementary school watching my teachers struggle with math.

You're mis-reading it. Overall through the entire district 7% met requirements. Within the 93% that did not meet the requirements there were 23 schools, or 2000 students (not counting those who failed in schools that did have a student or two who passed) where nobody passed at all

Having watched "Last Chance High" yesterday, I feel like the big issue is rooting out retards at an early age.

Lil nigga is 14 and can't add 60 and 10. And I don't want to say you can totally judge someone's intelligence by how they look, but this kid had the IQ of a potato. Powerlevel but I met a shitbull mix the other day that was obviously much more intelligent and engaged than this little fucker.

Some of these people are not educable. It's stupid that prison is the default endpoint for them because it's expensive, but especially for the violent ones... it's not just math that they can't be educated about.

Like I suffer with anger management issues and there have been lots of times in my life where I have felt like beating the shit out of someone, but then I think about what a fucking hassle jail, a trial, and all that shit sounds like, and I calm myself or remove myself from the situation.

These people cannot do that. It's like telling a depressed person not to be depressed or a schizo not to be schizo. If they could, they would, but they can't.

one thing im surpsied is, shouldn't there be a handful of students in each school who become valedictorian and get good grades and shit.

Any of the kids that have any fraction of intelligence will move to magnet schools or other districts because any black or mexican or white kid that wants to learn and puts forth effort is violently bullied.

Our city decided the solution to the problem was to bus all the ghetto students into the nicer schools. All it did was make a whole bunch of the white students worse and didn't help the minority students at all. It turned the school from a wonderful place to a nightmare in a year and after a few years, all the data showed no improvement in the students that were bussed in. The people screaming for more money for the school district have no idea that every school gets the exact same amount of money per student per day. Both rich and poor areas. And for some strange reason, the white areas do fine with that money. They outright refuse to believe there are any cultural differences that contribute to the performance of the students.
