This kind of thing has happened before and every time, it has preceded a major change to the site in one way or another. This happened before the word filter, before the silly little video that played 24/7 globally on the site, before moot left etc. They will say it was a server migration issue or routine maintenance but in a few months, there will be a fun banner letting everyone know they sold the site to the Saudis or that you'll need a 4chan account soon or something silly.

I've noticed they've replaced google reCaptcha with hCaptcha when checking ban status. This is probably what's breaking the posting captcha.

I agree, but it also means sharty isn't any kind of replacement. I don't know what soyjak variant describes me for thinking this, but I also get horribly bored by watching people hurl indecipherable spam at one another. 4chan is getting pretty bad with the intentional logical fallacies (post-ironic bullshitting is arguably just as bad) but at least you see people discuss things occasionally.

HCaptcha was there along with all the other capthas and waiting times for posting and it worked "fine" before this so I doubt that's the reason.

hCaptcha is very new, like a day or two new. Last week it was google reCaptcha.

They were using hCaptcha for posting from a new IP/cookie session, and Goolag reCaptcha for ban checks. That's where the confusion comes from
