Because if direct knowledge from God were all that common, everyone would have it. It is vastly more likely that any human claiming divine knowledge is completely full of shit. Someone who actually had it would use it for a divine purpose, not self-aggrandizement, so anyone openly boasting of it obviously does not have it.

Also consider PKD's Exegesis. Can you really be said to be a schizo when your novels and even throw-away short stories have dominated the SF cinematic universe for decades after you died? And if you actually read his Exegesis, one of his more prominent theories is basically, yes, I just had a schizophrenic breakdown.

And since it's literally thousands of pages, I'd suggest, if the opinions of a completely drug-addled SF author about gnosticism and pre-Socratic philosophy and other shit are interesting to you, try to find a copy of In Pursuit of Valis, which is a weird condensation of Dick's ideas about the weird hallucinations he had that led to his final novels.
