Only reason I ask is because a few years ago, there was a murderer who posted previously private gore pictures of one of his victims. Curious to know if it’s possible to pull any data from where that post came from.

nah not a dumb question. 4chan does retain archived posts and details about those posts, but it doesn't retain them for very long, a lot of info is lost once it hits archive. Even more once the post is deleted.

Gore, especially that of a murder victim, falls under GR1. If it got deleted, it was likely banned and the post was forwarded to the FBI.

that info would have contained a device fingerprint, ip address, reverse lookup, country code, etc. All info that law enforcement could use to identify who posted it and from there they can just do their usual search and seizure.

It’s still really crazy how one of the most important people in the history of the internet just up and left and no one really cares. Ever since he joined google he has not posted anywhere on the internet. He really went from being terminally online to not posting in a decade.

Instead of running another option is to do only the hosting.

The “all images must be moderator approved” or “pay one dollar in crypto to post” are effective filters.

it'll probably take them a very long time to get the site back up. I feel like they don't really have a responsible server administrator, and whoever is fixing this is basically going to need to:
1. Reformat the entire device.
2. Reinstall 4chan.
3. Restore 4chan's database to the last save state, if available.

But who is the person responsible for this? Does anyone know how to do this? They're running it on FreeBSD, last updated in 2019. Does ANYONE Hiroyuki has contact with actually know how 4chan actually works right now, enough to completely reformat a server and get this running?

Site's been running on inertia. Mods' knowledge goes as far as updating the php files (whoever's been doing that doesn't even know regexes btw). None of them have any idea how to run a server.
And, as I've suspected for years, Hiroshima Nagasaki's not running the site at all. He has to step in eventually but he's an entrepreneur, not a sysadmin, he has no idea what the fuck he should do now.
