Because a free speech anonymous image board really needs someone coming in and banning people that you hate. If you want discussion that's overmoderated, install discord and join servers with topics you like.
This is such a dumb, lazy false dichotomy.
Think for a second. There are more options than just 1.) "live under discord's boot" or 2.) "get spammed to death by schizoposting every time you try to do anything." Just because someone doesn't want one doesn't mean that they're asking for the other.
If there's "overmoderation" and "undermoderation," then maybe there could be an acceptable level of moderation that is beneficial without being overbearing. And yes, that wasn't what 4chan jannies were doing, but that's not the point.

It honestly sounds like you just don't have any experience with threads (especially generals) getting ruined by this kind of thing.
The idea isn't "banning people you hate" for personal grudges or some shit. It's about finding some way to counter people who are spamming endlessly.
With schizo spammers, everyone else in the thread is forced to derail what they were trying to talk about in order to address what the spammer is forcing, or they all just give up and accept the spammer's framing, or they really give up and stop engaging with it, and the thread or the entire subject or even the entire board slowly dies.

You can have a discussion, or you can have spam. Each precludes the other. You can't just say "free speech" and call it a day. You will always have to pick one of the two.
I want as much unfettered speech as possible. But you can't have free speech if you're being spammed.

I'm also thinking you are because I get a nice chunk of negative reacts when I point it out.
"People don't like or agree with me—that means I must be right!" is a pretty dumb line of thinking. You don't have to sink this deeply into confirmation bias, man. Just actually think about shit instead of patting yourself on the back and telling yourself what you want to be true.

Not in every board you obtuse motherfucker, there are still topic rules and blue boards, as inconsistently as the rules for off topic are applied.
The problem with 4chan's moderation is that it is simultaneously extremely opaque and inconsistent, a single faggot janny with a personal vendetta can make an entire topic impossible to discuss and there is no mechanism to get him removed for it, zero transparency from mods or hiro.
Either commit to it and remove rules like global against racism that are ignored 99% of the time and only used to for jannies to ding a post they don't like, or actually enforce rules like no eceleb garbage on /v/.
So only on the heckin' wholesome blue boards is where I'm not allowed to say nigger? That's how most discord servers work by the way so I think you'd benefit more for having an account there :D
The problem with 4chan's moderation is that it's extremely retarded is what you mean to say. That whole situation you just laid that makes me never want to open any board. Literally everything you're telling me just shows every issue with the jannies on 4chan.
I may be obtuse, but atleast being a mindless tranny janny dicksucker is a fate I'm spared from.

@NoonmanR can't quote you directly for whatever gay reason.

I was pretty mean to Null on IRC because I blamed him for 8chan's technical troubles. That was years ago but I genuinely do feel bad about it. I have no idea what the hell was going on but he seems like a solid enough dude that it must have been simple human error.

As for way Ethan Ralph shit took over the board, I think it was because Killstream was at its peak and the fans were just so goddamn rowdy and didn't really have much respect for the established community or cultural that they drowned everyone else out, and when everybody else got sick of it they ended up being the last holdouts. The entire front page would be engulfed by fucking "bloodsports" threads that would reach 400 posts in an hour and then die. It was a headache.

I haven't thought about this shit in years, man. It's so fucking weird when something isn't long enough ago to be nostalgic but still long enough to feel like a completely different time period. I can't say I miss it too much, though. The problems ended up outweighing the benefits.

It's not worth trying to carry the entire past with you. It's better to break off your favorite pieces and build something new with them. Leave the dead weight behind.

What does Hiro even do anyway? Does he even interact with 2chan or is he just completely radio silent?
He got in trouble for selling user data IIRC back when he was in charge of 2channel

As far as his 4chan presence was concerned. He never did much. Hardly ever posted. there's one post he made about allowing one meta thread per board but then the mods overruled it. And the already managed 4chan vtuber attempt was his last meaningful interaction with 4chan. He basically just...exists in the background.

Point me one post by moot or one sentence in 4chan's terms of use where you see a commitment to "free speech" in your terms ie. encouraging off topic lowest denominator garbage.
I have a video from an anime convention in 2005 where moot hosted a panel to discuss 4chan as a site, moderation and general vibes, but the winamp file of it is on a dead 16GB HDD that I never had the precious dataz extracted from yet so until then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

EDIT: Thank fuck I remembered these details(year/venue), because someone else uploaded it to youtube as I knew they would have:
This was pre-youtube video so downloading it was a bitch when it was new, praise be the archivist god who kept it up

The problem with the moderation is that it's entirely on if the mod actually wants to do their job. There will be vidya threads where someone starts posting /l/-tier images and gets no bans while an offtopic politics flamewar is in the same thread and gets insta-deleted. The moderators do it for free and still can't do the bare minimum.

I've been thinking a lot about how to reply to this thread since it was made. I think I've been on an upward trend since then. I've got problems like everyone else does, and I cope with them in various ways (booze, weed, cigs). It sounds corny as hell, but helping 4chan be the best that
it can be is one of those things that helps me cope too. I saw a person post "based jannies" on one of the generals because I deleted porn fast enough to the user's liking (i.e. instantly). a mod said that I was doing a good job. These things made my day.
There are days where I feel very lonely. I see a lot of vitriol on my boards and it affects my worldview in ways I can't control and I feel helpless because it feels like the world is going to shit But there's a world outside of 4chan, twitter, reddit, the internet overall. sometimes you need to
get up and take a nature walk. Look at a leaf. smell the grass as the wind blows up a field by the sidewalk. take off your socks and shoes and walk ankle-deep in some water (ocean, river, lake, etc). life moves fast today, and being on 4chan (especially jannying) is like an endless
dopamine feed. Really, truly - touch grass. It's actually good for you.
I've been exercising this year, probably for the first time in my adult life, and - spoiler alert - it actually has improved my mental health. You hear this all the time because it's fucking true. It's hard to get started at first, but after about 3 or 4 months I really started noticing how good I felt.
This has cascading effects. feeling good means I can cook for myself instead of getting fast food, I can go for walks in the evening, I have the energy to play video games with my dad.
I turn 30 this year I'm still very lonely. I live alone, tfw no gf, not many IRL friends. but I think if you learn to take care of yourself, focus on learning how to exist independently, and think with an optimistic mindset - you will make it. Falling down is allowed, getting back up is mandatory.

Least pathetic jannoid.

Rules weren't even enforced consistently on the blue boards. For example, It wasn't unheard of for some threads on /lgbt/ to devolve into just sharing nudes around, regardless of what the actual topic was. I always assumed it was tranny favoritism with the jannies

Glad it wasn't just me. But yeah, the killstream's last years were when Ralph was at his peak. I remember when he posted revenge porn on /cow/ because someone pissed him off or something. Good times.

He doesn't even own the original 2channel (now 5channel) that he founded in 1999 anymore after it was seized by jim watkins (also owns 8chan). Today he manages the less popular competitor 2ch.sc which he claims to be the true and honest 2channel
