I don't think 4chan is dead, but you're right in that 4chan is really the only place to discuss many topics online. Reddit is just advertisements and bots, good for Googling nice bits of information for tech support and for local communities like city subreddits, but not much else. Social media like Twitter and its derivatives are too short-form, Discord servers are too secretive and isolated, the Fediverse is too fractured and doesn't have the activity to sustain it. 4chan is really all there is for general discussion on the Internet for a lot of topics. Dozens of different communities were born and still live under that umbrella, because there's just nothing left in the modern Internet capable of supporting the growth of new communities.
