to summarize: some fat whore who published a shitty power point presentation she called a video game, fucked 5 different video game reviewers, she won nominations for indie game awards, and when people called this out the 4chan jannies nuked any mention of it. it is the entire reason 8chan took off. it was later revealed that moot was a personal friend of one of the anti-GG women, maybe even Zoe herself.

if you read the Wikipedia article about GamerGate you will see the common parlance of lying wiki snakes all over it, like "discredited conspiracy theory" regarding her pay for play, but there is no doubt about it that she did fuck those 5 guys, there's no doubt about it that they worked for game review companies, and there's no doubt that she received nominations for a "game" that amounted to a choose-your-own adventure book about being too depressed to do fucking anything.

this event was not just a crack in the foundation for 4chan, it basically drove thousands of disgruntled young men to a website whose top two boards were /v/ and /pol/, and the /pol/ on 8chan was explicitly neo-nazi aligned. those people developed a massive distrust in all forms of traditional media and tech power structures and that permeated throughout american culture.

it was basically an eye-opener for everyone on 4chan walking through life asleep during Obama's second term. if the media was willing to collude together to cover up something as stupid, petty, and inconsequential as Zoe Quinn sucking cock for game reviews, what else were they lying about? Climate Change? 9/11?? The Holocaust???

It would take minutes to spin up a new server and install the necessary packages, plus do the needful hardening etc. The only thing that'd really take time is getting the codebase up to speed for whatever version PHP is at now. Security is a waste of time, that's what Cloudflare is for :)

Honestly its all a bit cathartic, 4chan has been some kind of monolith, frozen in time for me; I can think of all these other platforms that have died over time, but 4chan has remained, even if its original spirit has been completely hollowed out as the internet marches forward into becoming a general public hug box for corporations and the common denominator. Its nice to see it explode, maybe a symbol we can move on. A space frozen in time cannot make space for new structures, its important that we destroy the places of the past that no longer serve a purpose, so that we can form new places to carry its spirit, in whatever form it takes.

It's all very simple indian tier PHP5-era code that'll probably take minimum effort if any to get up running on PHP 8. Apparently mysqli is deprecated in PHP 8, but outside of the strange moving parts (e.g the PDF parsing) there's very little attack surface.

There is no fucking way Hiro would bother coughing up real money to fix any of this. If he actually cared, he would have had some code monkeys to maintain the site instead of jannies plugging the leaks with duct tape. 4chan is just a source of passive income to him. The most likely outcomes are either:
  1. He just dumps it because he thinks it's not worth the effort
  2. He sells it to somebody else and it becomes their problem
