I posted big pics, especially if I'm posting emulator screenshots at the render resolution (that's me with the Bel Air that says NIGGER on the back window in MC3, if you've seen those shots).

Okay shitposting and personal opinions on the site aside, how long until 4chan is back up and running? It's obviously coming back but does it really have to take fucking 3 weeks? Why can't it be back already? Gookmoot should easily be able to hire skilled programmers fast no?

IIRC this was an issue from before 4chan automatically stripped the EXIF data from images (for all board besides /p/). Then a few years back someone from /cumg/ figured out a way to embed links to filehosts into the headers of .PNG files (which would load embedded inline on the site using a userscript) and the problem plagued the site again for a good 6-8 months, mostly on /v/.

4chan was running FreeBSD 10.1, which hit end of life (no more security patches) December 31, 2016. The 10 branch (spanning 10.0-10.4) was EOL Oct 31, 2018. https://www.freebsd.org/security/unsupported/

That's for the base OS and packages, and appears completely irrelevant for this exploit. They were using a Ghostscript PDF renderer from 2012, which is a famously buggy pile of shit: https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=ghostscript

PDF is a very complex file format, and exploiting bugs in it has been a weapon of choice for hacking campaigns since the early 2000s. The attacker didn't even need to find a new bug, just browse the list of dozens of past exploits and pick one to use. The same technique is often used in console hacking, where they have ancient browser versions with dozens of exploits to choose from.

PEE still worked up until the shutdown. Any time you saw a pic of Chloe from Fate, it almost always had a porn pic of her embedded.

There was some pretty cool usages too. There was a lot of trading of ebooks although a lot of that moved to Bookchan on AnonIB (which was a poorly run shithole that was like 95% revenge porn). Still have a bunch of ebooks left from that shit but of course pedophiles ruin everything.
