recently there has been someone (or a group of people?) coming into the mpv* threads on /g/ and spamming troonjak and gore videos. if you check the archive for previous mpv threads, you can see the absolute nonsense that occurs in them. an mpv-related thread with a bait-and-switch (vietnam cannibal video) has been up for 18 hours now. apologies for the structure of this post as i'm in a rush.

* you're probably wondering why there is a general for a media player. the answer: autism. i've been keeping track of these threads since last year and it is a shell of it's former self.

I never conceived of the idea that this site ever had a notable tranny presence. I think many of them still use it, it's not difficult to hide your power level, but I struggle imagining somebody having any sort of LGBT flag on their profile here unironically. Did people used to be that much in the open about it on this site like 10 years ago?
Oh they certainly are here, just not as bold yet.
Just take a look at your local tranny janny.
Janny doesn't display the flag here but in other places he does. Sad really..

Too bad. It was a good thread at one point, and is the King of All Media Players imo. Command line players ftw.

But the thing is, at the time I couldn't remember the last time I saw a proper OC thread like that. It seemed like one day all the creative people who weren't gooning or dooming 24/7 just disappeared. It may have been that they just stopped using the site as I did, but I don't know. From my experience, the new generation of posters never attempted to dethrone those legends of OC. Irony poisoning may have something to do with it. I was a pretty heavy user and I never really saw anything in the screenshot threads that was post 2014. Of course it's natural that the golden age would get the most screencaps and would be remembered with the most fondness, but still. I think there is an undeniable decline in overall quality, despite the rules specifically prohibiting complaints about the way 4chan is administered. Talk about a cringe reddit rule.
That is no coincidence, a lot of quality posters did indeed just disappear overnight. Around 2013, when Gamergate was just getting started, mootkins had a little spergout and so did his jannies, which lead to a massive exodus where majority of quality posters left for 8chan, leaving mostly the garbage behind. You know the rest of the story, things got progressively worse on 4chan and 8chan was shut down in 2018, leading to an end of an era. During the aftermath, many former 8chan posters did go back to 4chan(and improved quality of some boards for a little while) but by that point, the site was so shit that this hardly mattered. Altchans tried to start again under a federation of bunkers called "The Webring", but in 2020, the biggest one that called itself "Julay" had a rather massive implosion and that part of the internet never recovered from it. I would consider that event the end of the imageboards as we know it, since then none of them were really worth browsing in any capacity. 4chan's lifespan expired around the time of the massive Exodus, but as you can see the oldguard tried to keep things going for a little longer but they couldn't really get over their own faggotry after 8chan's shutdown following the ChristChurch shooting. At this point, I think the imageboard format simply doesn't work anymore, and the new generation is incompatible with it anyways. Sad, but what can you do?
Even /b/, always the utter worst board on the site, used to have a few at least funny threads up at a time. Last time I looked there was literally nothing but porn and other goonershit.
I can't tell you when I stopped posting on /b/ "during the golden years", but when I did come back to it(around 2014-15 when normalfags started to swarm the site) that's exactly what I saw. It was a culture shock for sure, nothing has changed since except that sometimes you get TDS threads post 2016 too for some fucking reason. This really highlights the change in the mindset of your average user there over the years, from /b/ being a funny board where you shoot the shit or laugh at something random to just being another gooner board.

Why do you think so? most of these incidents originate from spergs sperging too much.

But to be honest i see why you would think so, it's really fucking hard to stop ban evasion on imageboards without massive fingerpriting like the sharty does, and all non long-term solutions to shitposting require stuff like thread id's or again, doing more fingerprinting then a fresh windows 11 install. the most effective method of stopping low quality bait and such is to have a good userbase. but that requires time and lots of bans, said bans will only be effective if the affected user has a hard time ban evading.

Simple, there is no more users to fill these imageboards. Aside from 4chan and the sharty, everything else(including 8moe) are ghost towns. It doesn't matter how many features or how good the community or the discussions are if you need to wait 4 hours to get a single reply to a post. Discord, Twitter, even The Farms are a more widely used alternative for communities and discussions now. I mention Julay since that was the last cohesive and most importantly active community I remember, after that everything fell apart and The Webring splintered a dozen different ways. None of them took off.

yeah there's that too, unless 4chan shuts down forever all altchans will be ghost towns, despite the sharty holding second place i find it unlikely that it will siphon all users when that inevitably happens. not everyone likes the chaotic spam site nature of the site. and not everyone finds the bald man with glasses funny so i only see a percentage of users staying there, thats assuming that the 4chan userbase won't over take the site like it happened on the april hack, this was probably 4chan's biggest win against the sharty

More like waiting 4 days for a reply. With that said, I have to strongly disagree with this take. Not everything online needs to be a dopamine machine with thousands of posts per second. Sometimes slow is good. It gives you time and space to digest the conversation. Also, the quality of users will always win over the quantity of users. A smaller base is more likely to follow board etiquette. You have a better chance of building a community with a small but consistent userbase. I could go on and on about the benefits of small niche communities, but you get the idea.

>try to make a post on /vst/ while on vacation
>banned apparently
>check out why

Great, there's now a non-zero chance for having a nonce from 4chan having slept in the same bed I'm sleeping in or him being the owner of the building.
I was at an airport once and was on /trv and tried to post, and what would you know, the airport IP was banned for pedoshit.
