If you're good with old stuff and just want something relatively straightforward, Masters of Orion 2 is probably the GOAT imo. Otherwise, I think Endless Space 2 is probably the most interesting 4X game out there. Stellaris is cool as well but it has a bit too many features that are usually found in grand strategy for me to really warm up to it.

old stuff's cool but so's indie stuff.

Humankind's not exactly indie but I'm curious to see where it goes.

Big fan of CIV6 but yeah, id kill for decent AI that teams up to try and stop me because even on deity, once you're past Ancient there really isnt much to fear
Its a shame because its really good in most other ways

Get the first Master of Orion.
No, get the second Master of Orion.

After that get Capitalism Plus. Annihilate your enemies by buying stock in their company and dump it when you release a better product than theirs at a lower price because you own the places mining or producing the resources needed, resources they buy. Raise the price of raw materials for them while you yourself buy it at cost for your own factories enabling you to undercut them while also running a massive marketing campaign. When they're on the ropes, finish them and become a majority shareholder. Now their stuff is yours.

Played Civ6 way too much in college. Still have a soft spot for it, but I took a step back a few years ago to regroup/recharge.

TRYING to get into Stellaris. That game might be too autistic for me though (even though I LOVE the game and watching LPs of it). Not giving up yet, but Paradox game autism is a bigger hurdle than expected for me...

I'm very excited for it, considering it's the same studio that made Endless Space 2.
May want to play Endless Legend to get a glimpse of how the combat will probably play out. Granted its still a good game in its own right,, I liked it better than Civ.

I still regularly kill time with civ 6 but yeah the AI is trash. As the game's idea of adding difficulty is just them bonuses to resource gains.

Endless Space 2 is a major favorite of mine, massive improvement over the first.

i don't remember where the site is at this point, but there's a way to get a shitload of endless legend dlc from some official site connected to the devs.

Stellaris is ironically Paradox's most accessible game and largely because it's a mile wide and inch deep. Lots of systems, lots of potential (especially in empire creation), but once you dig down you quickly realize there's little there. Combat is an utter joke, there's not much separating how machines, hive minds, and normal species play, and for all the toys you get (megastructures, juggernauts, colossi) in the end it all devolves to galactic map painting. Not helping either is how the game chugs horribly in the mid to late phases, enough so they stuck a bandaid over it via pop growth curves since correcting it would probably necessitate a brand new game - and the later phases are of course where all the interesting goodies lie. To Paradox's credit they seem to acknowledge this given the indication of adding unique mechanics and fleshing out traditions, but personally I'll believe it when I see it; the company as a whole is too wedded to its DLC model and is coasting hard on its reputation.

I will second Endless Legend and Endless Space 2 though, especially Legend, they feature some of the best empire design in the genre given the radically different approach to each faction and provide some RPG-lite quests and structured quest victory conditions to provide tangible objectives outside the usual expectations. Also Amplitude kills it when it comes to art, soundtrack, and most importantly GUI: their games look and sound incredible, even if some aspects like the combat systems can be tedious at times. Really have high hopes for Humankind, especially if it can finally light a fire under Firaxis' ass.

Also another one to pay attention to this year for any space 4x lover is Distant Worlds 2. The franchise is far less known than Stellaris (it's published by Slitherine Software), but it destroys Stellaris when it comes to economics and the sequel looks like it'll improve on it in all aspects.

I think Endless Legend pops up on sale like once a month somewhere.

During the Steam sale they were selling the whole Endless Franchise for I think less than $50 and I think included all the DLC, so Endless Space 1 and 2, Legend and Dungeon

Yea its frequently on sale I think seen it at 80% for all but the newest DLC.

I've played a lot of endless legend. The combat definitely isn't it's strongest suit, but the factions are just so interesting in that game. My only real concern with the new one is that it's going to lack that fantasy worldbuilding element, but their basic 4X stuff is still much better than the recent Civ games so I trust it to be good in that regard, if nothing else.
