Can cat people fill me in? I know a lot of people just let their cats outside unattended and just assume they'll come back.. I also know people who have a don't let the cat go outside policy, they'll never come back. Is every cat different or does it depend on the environment? Obviously i'm aware of barn cats and stuff, but chris lives in a more trafficked suburban environment, is it appropriate to let them out there?

I know with dogs, depending on where you live, it's a terrible idea to just let them go outside unattended for hours. They'll either get hit by a car darting back and forth between streets or find some way to cause serious destruction. You pretty much only let them out in a fenced in area. Even if there was no danger of cars, you let dogs out and they find each other, they get super riled up. Do cats just sort of chill when they get out?

How often do cats want to go out? How long do they usually stay out there? What do they do? And when does it become weird they don't want to come back in?

Picture this: Sorbet wanders too far from home. Nice person finds him, sees his injuries, decides to take care of him.

Yeah, that's :optimistic: as hell. But the alternative is :heart-empty:.

I said something similar upthread and was rated optimistic but honestly I want to be optimistic about this one. Poor Sorbet.

I let my cat outside during the night. He always comes back in the morning, because I have food and water for him. Cats wander to where the food is, my cat's little "territory" has neighboors that basically feed the neighborhood cats, but he always returns to me because my food and water is consistant, and he has a nice warm place to sleep. It all depends on the cat I suppose.

As for Sorbet, considering his health history I'm not very optimistic about his chances. Premature F if my gut feeling is right

Sorbet is in a better place now.

If somehow sorbet is not dead and somehow managed to survive while outside, I honestly, truely hope that a kind soul (that's not named Christian Weston Chandler) picked the cat up, took one look at sorbet, and said, "come with me and I'll make your life 10000 times better". Poor sorbet, he never asked to have Chris as a owner, and he definitely didn't deserve to get hit by a car and then sprayed with a fucking hose. Either that, or said person ends up calling Chris and Barb and telling them that sorbet is theirs now. It's 100% your fault sorbet ran away Chris, if you weren't such a horrible pet owner, then you wouldn't have let sorbet outside, nor would he have ran off.

There's nothing wrong with letting cats outside.

Whatever Sorbet's fate, I hope they are unharmed and healthy, and whether or not they return to Chris, they deserve a better fate than to be the pawn of some sped hoping to torment an autistic man who, in all fairness to him, is showing more empathy for his pet than the tormentor was showing period.

Why are you saying "they"? Sorbet is a boy, just say "he".

Does anyone know how old Sorbet is? I think Chris has taken care of him fairly well, cats are easy to take care of and it's not his fault he ran off and was hit by a car. It happens to a lot of good pet owners.

In the US, there are "outdoor cats" and "indoor cats". Outdoor cats wander around, hunting, fighting with other cats and other things like that. It's not about the type of cat, but the type of cat owner. Or more specifically, the type of cat ownership.

If you're treating the cat as a close personal pet, then you should never let the cat outside. But the attitude for a lot of people here (particularly in rural areas) is that cats are more like semi-feral wildlife who occasionally come inside for a safe place to sleep and to eat your food.

With outdoor cats, you'll find you don't have to feed them that much (if at all). This is because they might have several other houses at which they bed down (and get fed) and they also might fill up on birds and small mammals.

Outdoor cats will stay out all day and come back at night. Unless they have other places to sleep, in which case you might see them less often.

I love cats (not really a dog person) and I'd never let my cats outside. But I know people (and family members) who keep outdoor cats. It's a pretty common thing.

Chris is a perfectly fine pet owner to the cats.

People who don't realize this fall into one of three categories:
  • someone not familiar with "standard practice" when it comes to cats in the United States
  • someone not very informed about Chris' cat situation
  • sperglords who just rage incessantly at anything and everything Chris does

It's just a cat who fucking cares?

Ever owned a pet?

After a few months they become like family.

Fuck you robot I care. It sucks to lose a beloved pet and this is the only time I hope shit turns out good for Fatty since the cat was a fucking sweetie.
Aren't you just a special little snowflake?

5/19/17. Never forget. Sorbet still remembers.
I think I might have called back then that getting hit by the car really shortened Sorbet's life, and if I didn't call it somebody else did. Apparently even in August Sorbet was in bad shape.

Dammit Chris, this is the second known time you've indirectly killed a cat in less than five years. (:_(

No shit? I know you know Chris better than anyone on this board, but I still find it hard to believe someone who lives in a hoarder's paradise would be a fine pet owner.

He's a terrible pet owner to the dogs.

The cats are a different story because they have different requirements.

Nah man I just really miss my old pets. Also knowing how "well" Chris handles death? He needs a win.
Maybe you could donate some money to him?

Give the man a leg up?

If Sorbet is indeed gone he could use it to adopt another cat?

Right?? Nah, Chris pets are clearly cared for and given attention and excersing, jumping over the shit and piss that are only cleaned up when necessary. Don't forget the two beagles are great guard dogs as well seeing that one almost bit Catherine when she tried to pet it.
