A Final Solution to the Wiki Question

. I am debating between adding a totally new threaded view of just the best posts, or adding a button that says "jump to next highlight" while keeping you in the real view of the thread. I am leaning towards the latter.
I feel like the former would become a "only look at posts that agree with me" button. I do like the idea of the website basically bookmarking posts for you that jumps around while still being able to view context.

I dunno. I see how this can help but making ratings matter in any actual capacity seems like a lot of other trouble waiting to brew.
I hastily switched it over to 'reaction score'. Originally it was just 'reactions', XenForo doesn't keep reaction counts in any accessible field. I think that it'd be better to highlight a post with a ridiculously low score or one that is very contentious with a 0 effective rating but 100 bad/good ratings applied to it.

I still plan on making it total reactions the general barometer.

Yeah I'm not a fan of reddit-izing this place because that kind of system will always devolve into a circlejerk with only a few people able to control the conversation. I do like the idea of rewarding quality posts tho.

I'm doing this now so people can give feedback on how my idea works before I begin figuring out how I want to use this data useful. I was in favor of the "best posts" view, but "jump to next highlight" makes some sense. That wouldn't take the reader totally out of the thread. It might help supply the context of the highlighted posts.

You already see it in A&H where even well written responses with cited sources get trashed if it goes against the narrative and circlejerk posts get a mountain of love.

Thankfully on most lolcow threads people are pretty good about giving good reactions to posts that are well-informed and contribute to the conversations. The only place I could see this 'redditization' becoming an issue is in the off-topic boards.

I don't think they'll end up getting the gold-border treatment. This seems like a way to find posts that give people the best 'crash course' on particular cows.

If there are concerns of being too reddit-y would it possible to instead nominate informative posts for this? A supervisor or st could then give it the okay or whatever. I know doing it for old posts would be dumb for the amount of work it'd be but going forward maybe it could be a alternative if there's a worry for circlejerking over a "upvote" like system.

Regardless I really like the idea of this!

A whole new rating signifying content rather than commentary might be worth doing. If not, semper fi ratings being the barometer would cut down on a lot of shit. I hand them out specifically for people bothering to post content to threads, anyone trying to fuck up the system would have to pay to support it at least.

This whole thing is supposed to be about finding information, not getting good boy points. If there is a content rating I would propose that it be neutral, maybe restricted to people who have been here for a certain amount of time.

I like the idea of being able to skim the first hundred or so pages of a cow and hop between interesting events. Don't get me wrong, I love the interim posts calling cows retarded in the moment, they're usually on the mark and funny, but when you're just trying to figure out who this person is sometimes it goes beyond a good OP.

The Reddit-ization is a valid concern but I don't think you're going to see too much change in posting behaviors. If you post some dumb shit you get Dumb and Autistic; all it does is drop your overall score, not hide or diminish post visibility like Reddit does. Hiding posts destroys the ability to have a conversation and is uniquely Reddit, but unless there was some weird reverse-gilding of posts or other fuckery here I'm not too concerned about it.

Oh great let's make these neets even more autistic about ratings

Giving more weight to informative or Semper Fidelis is not to make people more autistic about ratings. It's to make it so this "reddit gold" thing isn't as useless as, well, reddit gold. Null should make a new rating for newsworthy/archival whatever and give that one the most weight for this new plebbit gold system.

This is marked "gold" in the newest ALR thread. It's probably the highest rated post in the thread, which, okay. But why does it need to be highlighted? Can't people just see that it's the most highly rated? It's not informative or archival or particularly funny (no offense Berries, love ya gorl)

If the point is some kind of quasi-wiki thing, a post like this would make more sense to get a gold border

I don't see the point of this thing if it's just going to highlight the most highly rated posts in threads. We have eyes and can already see which posts are the most highly rated. I dunno. I guess it's a cute feature but it has nothing to do with the Final Wiki Solution imo

But why does it need to be highlighted?
probably because it's funny. I see value to having things highlighted just because they're informative but if someone's reading the site you also probably want funny posts there.

A whole new rating signifying content rather than commentary might be worth doing.
We have about 6 years worth of posts and having this system work only on a forward operating assumption is really bad.

The only place I could see this 'redditization' becoming an issue is in the off-topic boards.
I'm considering limiting this to only on-topic boards so that this does not happen.

I think it's a great idea, especially when the thread is 500 pages long and all the comments are "lol fat". Makes it difficult to dig into some of the larger threads.

It's funny you should say that because if this gold thing is applied retroactively you're going to see a ton of "lol fat" posts framed in gold because people flocked to upvote those 🙄

I get that but I thought this was all related to replacing the wiki or whatever. oh well.
