The first step is to acknowledge you have a problem. We'll fuck this means I actually have to write good shit now.
I feel like the former would become a "only look at posts that agree with me" button. I do like the idea of the website basically bookmarking posts for you that jumps around while still being able to view context.. I am debating between adding a totally new threaded view of just the best posts, or adding a button that says "jump to next highlight" while keeping you in the real view of the thread. I am leaning towards the latter.
I hastily switched it over to 'reaction score'. Originally it was just 'reactions', XenForo doesn't keep reaction counts in any accessible field. I think that it'd be better to highlight a post with a ridiculously low score or one that is very contentious with a 0 effective rating but 100 bad/good ratings applied to it.I dunno. I see how this can help but making ratings matter in any actual capacity seems like a lot of other trouble waiting to brew.

I was in favor of the "best posts" view, but "jump to next highlight" makes some sense. That wouldn't take the reader totally out of the thread. It might help supply the context of the highlighted posts.I'm doing this now so people can give feedback on how my idea works before I begin figuring out how I want to use this data useful. You already see it in A&H where even well written responses with cited sources get trashed if it goes against the narrative and circlejerk posts get a mountain of love.Yeah I'm not a fan of reddit-izing this place because that kind of system will always devolve into a circlejerk with only a few people able to control the conversation. I do like the idea of rewarding quality posts tho.
Thankfully on most lolcow threads people are pretty good about giving good reactions to posts that are well-informed and contribute to the conversations. The only place I could see this 'redditization' becoming an issue is in the off-topic boards.Yeah I'm not a fan of reddit-izing this place because that kind of system will always devolve into a circlejerk with only a few people able to control the conversation. Damn I'll have to switch how I was using informative then...YES!! Perhaps give extra weight to the 'informative' icon? Lots of posts are uprated because they're funny, for example, but the informative ones usually add information.
A whole new rating signifying content rather than commentary might be worth doing. If not, semper fi ratings being the barometer would cut down on a lot of shit. I hand them out specifically for people bothering to post content to threads, anyone trying to fuck up the system would have to pay to support it at least.Yeah I'm not a fan of reddit-izing this place because that kind of system will always devolve into a circlejerk with only a few people able to control the conversation. Oh great let's make these neets even more autistic about ratings
If you look at the first page of the post ratings discussion thread, when Nool first added them, he actually thought it would be a good idea to hide posts with enough negative ratings.Hiding posts destroys the ability to have a conversation and is uniquely Reddit,
probably because it's funny. I see value to having things highlighted just because they're informative but if someone's reading the site you also probably want funny posts there. But why does it need to be highlighted?
We have about 6 years worth of posts and having this system work only on a forward operating assumption is really bad.A whole new rating signifying content rather than commentary might be worth doing.
I'm considering limiting this to only on-topic boards so that this does not happen. The only place I could see this 'redditization' becoming an issue is in the off-topic boards.
I think it's a great idea, especially when the thread is 500 pages long and all the comments are "lol fat". Makes it difficult to dig into some of the larger threads.
